Introduction
The need to have a Faroese/English Dictionary became clear in 1972 when we were working on a translation of F?royingas?ga into English. In carrying out this task, we had to use the Or?ab?k by M. A. Jacobsen and Chr. Matras coupled with a Danish-English Dictionary. It was quickly appreciated that this method not only increased the amount of work and time expended, but also the risk of error.
After considering our own problems, we realized that similar problems must also apply to any Faroese person, child or adult, who was trying to lea English. Accordingly, we commenced our first draft of the Dictionary in the autumn of 1972.
The original draft was based on the Or?ab?k by Jacobsen and Matras but later it became necessary to incorporate into our Dictionary the additional material contained in J. H. W. Poulsen's Supplement to Jacobsen and Matras' Or?ab?k published in 1974.
We considered that it was essential for our Dictionary to be edited in the Faroe Islands by native Faroese speakers and this editing has been duly carried out there. We would therefore extend our most sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who assisted in editing our Dictionary in those Islands and, in particular, to ?li Breckmann, Se?n Sweeney, J?han Hendrik W. Poulsen, John Davidsen, T?r?ur J?ansson, Jonhard Mikkelsen, Annfinnur Skaale, Sister Cecilia O'Hagan and Maud Heinesen.
The Table of "Principal Sources Cited" is based on the Tables contained in the Or?ab?k of Jacobsen and Matras and in Poulsen's Supplement.
We would also express our thanks to our Printers, Leinster Leader Ltd. , of Naas, Co. Kildare in the Republic of Ireland, who have been most patient and understanding despite all the problems which have occurred.
