"Faroese - A Language Course for Beginners" consists of a grammar, a textbook and a CD. The course, which now supersedes Lockwood, is up-to-date and has been carefully prepared. It marks a breakthrough for foreign leaers of Faroese, whether they are in the Faroe Islands or elsewhere in the world.
The authors are both trained linguists: Hjalmar P. Petersen, who works at the University of Hamburg where he also gained his doctorate, and Jonathan Adams, who is a doctor from the University of London.
Jonathan Adams, who lives in Denmark and works at the Society for Danish Language and Literature research institute, was fluent in Danish and Swedish when he came to the Faroe Islands in 2004 to attend the first ever inteational summer institute in Faroese language and culture for foreign students at the University of the Faroe Islands. Hjalmar P. Petersen was a teacher at the institute and one of the authors of Faroese, An Overview and Reference Grammar (2004), which was used for teaching. However, it was clear that there was a lack of materials for leaing and practising the language as well as having the possibility to hear it spoken.
