PREFACE
A sports dictionary in five languages (i.e. Hungarian, English,
German, Russian and French had already been published in Hungary in
1952, on the occasion of the Olympic Games held in Helsinki. The
rapid progress of physical education and sport, however, called for
a new enlarged sports dictionary. Thus, in 1960, with the Olympic
Games of Rome in view, sports dictionaries in seven languages were
published (in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hungarian
and Russian), each volume representing one of the main branches of
sport, such as: track and field athletics, swimming, water polo,
gymnastics, football, fencing and basket ball.
