This volume of the A???dhy?y? of P??ini contains English translation of adhy?yas two and three. It includes Sanskrit text of individual s?tras with their transliteration, word-boundaries, indication of inflectional endings and formation of compounds. Each s?tra is also fuished with anuv?tti, v?tti, examples, detailed explanatory notes, and complete derivational history of examples cited by the Ka?ik?v?tti.
Explanatory notes are presented to facilitate proper understanding of individual s?tras, especially in view of their formulation, interpretation, application and relative placement. An attempt has been made to sort out and explain pertinent issues, as raised and discussed by major commentaries. The appendix contains over 1000 examples with complete derivational history and discussions relevant to the P??inian grammatical system.
This volume is the third of a six-volume study. The fourth, fifth and sixth volumes of the series will cover the s?tras of adhy?yas four-five, six and seven-eight, respectively.
Rama Nath Sharma is Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. He received his Ph.D. (1971) in General Linguistics from the University of Rochester where he also taught Linguistics for five years. His research interest includes grammatical theory in general, and P??ini and the Indian grammatical tradition, in particular.
