Не так давно, впервые осматривая тотемные столбы в туристической

зоне к северу от Ванкувера, я неожиданно испытал чувство «уже виденно

го». Вчитавшись в названия, я понял причину этого странного ощущения:

топография западного побережья Канады была мне знакома по собствен

ным переводам из индейской поэтессы Полин Джонсон, сделанным лет

двадцатьдвадцать пять тому назад, когда поездка в Северную Америку ка

залась менее реальной, чем легенды ее краснокожих обитателей.

Канадская поэзия привлекала тем же, чем до сих пор привлекает сама

страна — эта была ниша, культурная окраина, из которой открывалась дверь

в английскую или французскую метрополию. К тому же, среди канадских

(или, точнее, квебекских) авторов встречались и настоящие знаменитос

ти, как, например, Эмиль Неллиган, последователь символистов, провед

ший две трети своей жизни в сумасшедшем доме. От других веяло конкре

тикой, заземленностью: добротно сколоченные сонеты дышали далью,

морем, чужой жизнью — ее хотелось увидеть, потрогать.

Несмотря на определенную невостребованность, переводы канадских

поэтов и прозаиков удалось опубликовать в ведущих московских издатель

ствах и журналах. С появлением интернета читательская аудитория рас

ширилась. Канада стала совсем близкой.

AT HUSKING TIME

At husking time the tassel fades

To brown above the yellow blades,

Whose rustling sheath enswathes the corn

That bursts its chrysalis in scorn

Longer to lie in prison shades.

Among the merry lads and maids

The creaking oxcart slowly wades

Twixt stalks and stubble, sacked and torn

At husking time.

The prying pilot crow persuades

The flock to join in thieving raids;

The sly racoon with craft inborn

His portion steals; from plenty’s horn

His pouch the saucy chipmunk lades

At husking time.

ERIE WATERS

A dash of yellow sand,

Windscattered and suntanned;

Some waves that curl and cream along the margin of the strand;

And, creeping close to these

Long shores that lounge at ease,

Old Erie rocks and ripples to a fresh sou’western breeze.

A sky of blue and grey;

Some stormy clouds that play

At scurrying up with ragged edge, then laughing blow away,

Just leaving in their trail

Some snatches of a gale;

To whistling summer winds we lift a single daring sail.

O! wind so sweet and swift,

O! dangerfreighted gift

Bestowed on Erie with her waves that foam and fall and lift,

We laugh in your wild face,

And break into a race

With flying clouds and tossing gulls that weave and interlace.

Во время жатвы тяжелы

Колосья, и поля смуглы,

Когда спеленатые зерна

Выстреливают непокорно

На свет из шелестящей мглы

Во время жатвы.

Смеются девушки задорно,

Скрипучий воз влекут упорно

По стеблям скошенным волы

Во время жатвы.

Вороньих королей послы

Для пиршеств заняли столы,

Енот добычу сгреб проворно,

И бурундук под слоем дерна

Забил запасами углы

Во время жатвы.

НА ОЗЕРЕ ЭРИ

Над бронзою песка

Темнеют облака,

К холмам пологим буруны бегут издалека,

А волны всюду те же,

И южный ветер свежий,

Играя пеною, скользит вдоль выцветших прибрежий.

То белый, как прибой,

То сероголубой,

Здесь одинокий парус мы поставили с тобой.

Громада туч сырая

Нависнет, замирая,

Плывем, касаясь мачтою изрезанного края.

Лететь не страшно нам

Навстречу бурунам,

Смеясь в лицо напененным, искрящимся волнам, —

Во влажных клочьях дыма,

Вперед — неудержимо! —

За чайками и тучами, несущимися мимо.

THE ARCHER

Bend back thy bow, O Archer, till the string

Is level with thine ear, thy body taut,

Its nature art, thyself thy statue wrought

Of marble blood, thy weapon the poised wing

Of coiled and aquiline Fate. Then, loosening, fling

The hissing arrow like a burning thought

Into the empty sky that smokes as the hot

Shaft plunges to the bullseye’s quenching ring.

So for a moment, motionless, serene,

Fixed between time and time, I aim and wait;

Nothing remains for breath now but to waive

His prior claim and let the barb fly clean

Into the heart of what I know and hate —

That central black, the ringed and targeted grave.

THE PRIZE CAT

Pure blood domestic, guaranteed,

Softmannered, musical in purr,

The ribbon had declared the breed,

Gentility was in the fur

Such feline culture in the gads

No anger ever arched her back —

What distance since those velvet pads

Departed from the leopard’s track!

And when I mused how Time had thinned

The jungle strains within the cells,

How human hands had disciplined

Those prowling optic parallels;

I saw the generations pass

Along the reflex of a spring,

A bird had rustled in the grass,

The tab had caught it on the wing:

Behind the leap so furtivewild

Was such ignition in the gleam,

I thought an Abyssinian child

Had cried out in the whitethroat’s scream.
