Authors

Dmitrii Bak. Ph. D. Vicedean of the Department of History and Philology

(RGGU). Vicedirector of the Institute of European Cultures (RussiaGermany

France). Author of more than 150 published works (history of Russian literature,

modern literature, criticism, translations, editorial works).

Michail Bezrodny completed his PhD at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He

currently resides in Bonn. He is the author of Konets tsitaty (1998) and articles on

the history and poetics of 20th century Russian literature.

Sergei Biriukov PhD, is a literary specialist and poet. He is the founder and

president of Akademiia Zaumi, a laureate of the International Essay Prize Contest in

Berlin, and winner of A. Kruchenykh Award. From 1991 to 1998 he taught at Tam

bov State University. He is the author of three books on verse theory: Zegma: russkaia

poeziia ot man’erizma do postmodernizma (Moscow, 1994); Teoriia i praktika

russkogo poeticheskogo avangarda (Tambov, 1998); Poeziia russkogo avangarda

(Moscow, 2001), and several volumes of poetry. He is currently teaching at Martin

Luther University, Germany.

Nikolai Bogomolov graduated from the Department of Philology of Moscow

University in 1973 and earned his Ph.D. at the Department of Soviet Literature in

1979. Has been teaching in the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow University since

1978. Now professor and Head of the department of Literary and Artistic Criticism.

Author of over 300 scholarly works, including Lines Illuminated by October (Mos

cow, 1987), Mikhail Kuzmin: articles and materials (Moscow 1995), Poetic Speech

(Moscow, 1995), Mikhail Kuzmin: A Life in Art (coauthor J. E. Malmstad) (Moscow

Susanna Chernobrova is an artist with Ierusalimskii zhurnal. She has pub

lished a collection of poetry, Na pravakh rukopisi (Jerusalem, 1997), as well as arti

cles in Israeli, Russian and Latvian journals. Her works have been exhibited in Mos

cow, Jerusalem and Helsinki, and she has had individual exhibitions in Moscow, Riga

Sergei Chuprinin is a Doctor of Philology, a professor, a literary critic and a

founding member of the Academy of Contemporary Russian Letters. He has been

editor of the journal Znamia since 1993. He is the author of many articles and of

the books Krupnym planom. Poeziia nashikh dnei: problemy i kharakteristiki (Mos

cow, 1983) and Priamaia rech’: kritika—eto kritiki (Moscow, 1989).

Leszek Czubik is a graduate student at the Faculty of Information Studies, Uni

versity of Toronto. He intends to specialize in Slavic and East European librarianship

and is currently updating the Canadian part of the International Directory of Librar

ians and Library Specialists in the Slavic and East European Field.

Roman Dubrovkin is a translator and literary scholar. He is the author of Ste

fan Mallarme i Rossiia (1998) and of a number of articles on RussianFrench liter

ary connections. He has published translations from Italian (Petrarch, Tasso, Ugo

Foscolo, Victor Alfieri), French (Ronsard, Hugo, Verhaeren, Rimbaud, Mallarme, Valery)

German (Heine, Brentano, and other romantic poets), English (Shelley, Thomas

Moore, Longfellow, Poe, Robert Frost, Yeats and Kipling) and modern Greek (Cavafy,

Ritsos). He compiled the anthologies Iz sovremennoi kanadskoi poezii (1981) and

Sovremennia kanadskaia proza (1986) and translated the verse section of a book

on Pauline Johnson, Zateriannyi ostrov i drugie istorii (Moscow: Detskaia literature,

1988). His translations of poems by Emile Nelligan and Alfred DesRochers appeared

in Inostrannaia literature, no. 5 (1999).

Mikhail Gasparov is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a translator

of classical literature (Aesop, Aristotle, Pindar, Diogenes Laertes, Ovid, Suetonius,

medieval Latin poetry, the vagantes, and others), a specialist in poetry, and a cultural

theoretician. His books include Ocherk istorii russkogo stikha, Ocherk istorii evro

peiskogo stikha, Zanimatel’naia Gretsiia, Metr i smysl’: ob odnoi mekhanizme

kul’turnoi pamiati, Stat’i o russkoi poezii, Zapisi i vypiski. He is a winner of the State

Prize of the Russian Federation and of the Andrei Bely Prize.

Artur Grabowski (b. 1967 in Krakow) published volumes of poetry Z didaska

liow (1991), Pojedynek (1998), Ziemny poczatek (2000); three plays in one volume,

Do trzech razy sztuka (2000); a microplay, Studnia (2001); a collection of essays,

Klatka z widokiem (forthcoming); a book on theory, Wiersz: forma i sens (1999), as

well as numerous articles, reviews and translations from English. He has contributed

to bruLion, but of late has been publishing most often in Znak, Teatr, and Res Publi

ca. He is now working on a novel. He teaches poetics, the theory of literature and

drama, and twentiethcentury Polish literature at Jagiellonian University.

Vera Kalmykova is a literary specialist and journalist. Her journalistic interest

is the development of contemporary culture (literature, art, theatre). Scholarly in

terests include the works of Valerii Briusov and issues of poetic language.

Krzysztof Koehler (b. 1963) is a poet, essays and scholar. His volumes of poet

ry include Wiersze (1990), Nieudana pielgrzymka (1993), Partyzant prawdy (1996),

Na krancu dlugiego pola (1998), and Trzecia czesc; he has also published articles

and essays. His writings have appeared in Fronda, bruLion, and Arkana. He has taught

at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where he defended his doctoral disserta

tion in 1994, as well as at Rice Univesity and the University of Illinois in Chicago. He

now teaches at the Cardinal Wyszynski University in Warsaw.

Vladimir Kupchenko is a specialist in literary history and the first director of

the M.A. Voloshin Museum in Koktebel (Crimea). He is the author of a biography of

Voloshin and of many other books and articles on his life and works.

Ol'ga Kushlina. Doctor of Philology, Russian 20th century poetry specialist.

Compiler of several anthologies, including Russian 20th Century Literature in the

Mirror of Parody (1993), One Hundred Women Poets of the Silver Age (1996; second

edition 2000 — with coauthor), Russian 20th Century Drama (2 volumes, 2000),

Poetry of the Silver Age (3 volumes, 2001). Author of the book Passionflower. Peters

burg Windowsills (2001) as well as numerous articles and essays.

Aleksandr Laskin is a candidate in art history and an assistant professor at the

St. Petersburg University of Culture and Art. He is a member of the St. Petersburg

Union of Writers and is a winner of the International Tsarskoe Selo Prize in Art (1993)

and the Zvezda Prize (2001). His books include: Neizvestnye Diagilevi, ili konets

tsitaty (St. Petersburg, 1994); Neizvestny Mariengof (St. Petersburg, 1996); V poiska

kh Diagileva (St. Petersburg, 1997), and the scholarly monograph Russkii period

deiatel’nosti S.P.Diagileva (St. Petersburg, 2002). He was curator of the exhibition

«S.P. Diagilev in Photographs, Graphic Art and Sculpture» (National Pushkin Muse

um, 1997).

Aleksandr Lavrov is a Doctor of Philology and a Corresponding Member of the

Russian Academy of Sciences. He is on the staff of the Institute of Russian Literature

(Pushkin House). He has published extensively on the literature and culture of early

twentiethcentury Russia, and his books include Andrei Belyi v 1900e gody (1995),

and Etiudy o Bloke (2000). He has done textual editing and written commentaries

to the works of Bely, Blok, Briusov, Voloshin, Gippius, Kuz’min, and others.

Yana Meerzon. Theatre critic. In 1996 she obtained her M. A. from the Russian

Academy of Theatre Arts, Moscow, as a theatre historian. She is currently enrolled

into the Ph.D. program at the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama, University of

Toronto, writing her dissertation on Michael Chekhov's acting theory. Since the year

2000 she has been a member of Canadian Theatre Critics Association, publishing

both in English and Russian.

Margarita Pavlova, PhD, is on the staff of the Institute of Russian Literature

(Pushkin House) and is a specialist in the works of Fedor Sologub.

Vadim Perelmuter is a poet, literary historian, essayist and translator. He began

publishing in 1965. His first volume of poetry, Diary, came out in 1984 and since

then he has published two more poetry volumes (1991 and 1997) and a book on

Vyazemskii (1993). In all he has contributed to some twenty books, including vol

umes on Vyazemskii, Sluchevskii, Krzhizhanovskii, Shengeli, Shteinberg, Khodasevi

ch and others, as compiler, textologist, or author of introductions and commentar

ies. He has published over 100 articles in periodicals. Perelmuter also worked for 15

years (from 1977) on the editorial staff of Literature Education . He initially took

charge of the poetry section and then, for 12 years, headed literary theory and archi

val publications.

Maria G. Rewakowicz holds a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from

the University of Toronto. She is Research Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Classi

cal and Modern Languages and Literatures at Rutgers University (Newark). Begin

ning in October 2003 she will be a Research Fellow and Visiting Scholar at the Ken

nan Institute in Washington, DC. Her current projects are: “The Disguises of the New

York Group: Ukrainian Emigre Poetry after World War II” and “PostSoviet Literary

Ukraine: Identities and Canons.”

Barry Scherr is the Provost and the Mandel Family Professor of Russian at Dart

mouth College. He has written articles on Russian verse theory and early twentieth

century Russian prose; among his books are Russian Poetry: Meter, Rhythm, and

Rhyme; Maksim Gorky: Selected Letters, coedited and cotranslated with Andrew

Barratt; and Eisenstein at 100: A Reconsideration, coedited with Al LaValley.

N. Norman Shneidman is Professor Emeritus, University of Toronto. He is the

author of eight books, many articles and chapters to books, including Literature

and Ideology in Soviet Education (1973), Soviet Literature in the 1970s (1979),

Dostoevsky and Suicide (1984), Soviet Literature in the 1980s (1989), and Russian

Literature 19881994: The End of an Era (1995). His new book Russian Literature

19952002: On the Threshold of the New Millennium is to be published by Univer

sity of Toronto Press in the spring of 2004.

Roman Timenchik is a specialist in early twentiethcentury Russian literature.

Since 1991 he has been a professor in the Department of Russian and Slavic Studies

of the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

Tat'iana Tsarkova works in “Pushkin House” and is a Doctor of Philology and

scholar in the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. Author of over 100 scholarly

works (including the anthology Russian Poetry of the Epitaph (1998), plus a mono

graph on the same theme), and three volumes of poetry: Philology Lane (1990), City

of Men of the Common People (1993), and Land of the Living (2000).

Evgeny Vitkovsky is a literary scholar, poet, prose writer and translator. He com

pleted studies in Art History at Moscow University. He began publishing in 1969 in

Moscow and, at about the same time, in the West under a variety of pseudonyms

(although since 1986 only under his own name). He is the author of many studies

on the translation of poetry, Russian émigré poetry and European poetry. He edited

the anthologies My zhili togda na planete drugoi (199497), Strofy veka – 2, a col

lection of world poetry translated by Russian poets (1998), Sem’ vekov frantsuzskoi

poezii (1999), and others. He has also edited the collected works of poets such as

Rainer Maria Rilke, Charles Beaudelaire, Francois Villon, Rudyard Kipling, and John

Keats. His threevolume novel Pavel II appeared in 2000 (Moscow: AST, Kharkov:

Folio).

Sergei Zav’ialov teaches classical and contemporary Russian literature at

St. Petersburg University and Latin at the Institute of Foreign Languages. He is the

author of three books of poetry: Ody i epody (St. Petersburg, 1994), Melika (Mos

cow, 1998), and Melika: Knigi pervaia i vtoraia (Moscow, 2003) and of a number of

articles on Greek, Soviet and postSoviet poetry.

Aleksandr Zholkovskii. Philologist and prose author. Graduated from the Fac

ulty of Philology of the Moscow State University in 1959 and completed his doctoral

degree in the university's Institute of Asian languages in 1966. Left the Soviet Union

in 1979 and currently resides in Los Angeles where he is a Professor at the University

of Southern California. Author of over ten monographs in the fields of linguistics

and literature studies, including volumes on Babel (in conjuction with M. Iampol'skii,

1994) and Zoshchenko (1999), and two volumes of prose — NRZB. Stories (Moscow,

1991) and Memoristic Vignettes and other NonFictions (2000).

Ludmila Zubova. Doctor of Philology, Professor in the Russian Language De

partment of Saint Petersburg University. Author of the books The Poetry of Marina

Tsvetaeva — A Linguistic Perspective (Leningrad University, 1989), The Language of

Marina Tsvetaeva's Poetry (Phonetics, Word Formation, Phraseology) (Leningrad

University, 1999), Contemporary Russian Poetry in the Context of the History of the

Language (Moscow, N.L.O. 2000).
