This lesson will introduce you to:
- Customs and practices accepted in Armenian marketplaces
- How to make purchases in Armenian shops
- The verbs “to want,” “to buy,” “to pay,” and “to take”
- The modal verb “can.”
Note:
The Armenian economy is still volatile due to the fact that the country is in the transition period to a market
economy. Armenia's current spending power is about $5,000, while the actual per-capita income is about
$1,315.
The Armenian national currency is the DRAM. Paper notes are issued in denominations of
500, 1.000, 5.000,
10.000, 20.000 and 50000 DRAM. A year or two ago, coins replaced all banknotes less than 500 dram (10, 20,
50, 100, 200, 500). Foreign banknotes can be exchanged at local banks and at exchange counters. 1USD =
379.12 drams.

Cultural note: Armenia has larger and smaller establishments (i.e. store, department stores, etc). Yerevan, the
capital, has different kinds of stores:
small stores, pharmacy/CVS types of stores, and department stores, whereas rural areas have mainly small
shops (especially the remote ones).

Grammar note: To construct the expression “want + infinitive” in Armenian, you will
conjugate the verb “want” (ուզենալ- uzanal) for each person and add the infinitive or the
base form of the second verb (see the conjugation of the verbs below).
Reminder:
English pronoun “You” can be either “դու” (singular, informal) or “դուք”
(plural, formal) in Armenian
