development will return in the 21st century, if these nanolayer materials can create an all pur-
pose cutting tool that can be manufactured to “give the best of all worlds” - highly wear resistant
at high cutting speeds; but extremely tough in milling and interrupted cutting. Viewed from
another perspective, such an “all purpose” tool would be greeted with great enthusiasm by the
purchasing department in any organization. Today, the great proliferation of grades and styles
causes much overstocking and, in the end, probably much unused, wasted material in the aver-
age “tool room”.
