land they came to a part of France, opposite England, a part which we now call

Normandy (Northman-dy). There they adopted the Christian faith, the French

language and the Roman law of their new home in France. They became French.

What did the Norman conquest do to England?

It gave it French kings and nobles. The Normans also brought with them the

French language. After the Norman conquest there were three languages in Eng-

land. There was Latin, the language of church and the language in which all

learned men wrote and spoke; the kings wrote their laws in Latin for some time

after the Conquest. It was difficult for the people to understand these laws. Then

there was French, the language which the kings and nobles spoke and which many

people wrote. Finally, there was the English language which remained the lan-

guage of the masses of the people. Some men might know all these languages;

many knew two; but most of the people knew only one. There were some people

who understood the French language though they could not speak it. Rich people

who owned land, the landowners, often knew French and Latin. But poor people,

the peasants, did not understand French or Latin. They understood only English.

In time, however, came the general use of the English language. About 1350

English became the language of law; and at that time there lived the first teacher

who taught his boys to read and write English and to translate, not from Latin into

French (4), but from Latin into English. Then between 1350 and 1400 lived Wy-

cliffe ['wIklIf] who made the first complete translation of the Bible into English,

and Chaucer (5), the father of English poetry.

The English language when it came into general use (6) was not quite the same

as it was before the Conquest. The grammar remained, but many words came into

it from the French language.

АНАЛИЗ СЛОВ

Не все слова этого урока равноценны в смысле их важности для вашей

дальнейшей работы. Уделите особое внимание предлогам и наречиям after,

before, against, between, finally, however, opposite. Без знания таких слов нель-

зя читать по-английски.

В тексте вы видите несколько названий национальностей и языков, напо-

минающих соответствующие русские слова. Слова типа French, English, Rus-

sian, Latin имеют несколько значений. Они могут определять существитель-

ное: a Russian book русская книга, a Latin text латинский текст, the French

language французский язык; могут обозначать национальность: he is Russian

он русский; they are English они англичане; she is French она француженка;

the English, the French означают англичане, французы. Предложения типа Не

speaks English; he translates into French переводятся: он говорит по-английски;

он переводит на французский язык.

Найдем теперь знакомые корни в некоторых словах. Иногда они сразу бро-

саются в глаза, как, например, в словах grammar, poetry, mass. В других слу-

чаях можно обнаружить сходство, если подумать. Сравните следующие анг-

лийские и русские слова. В первых двух колонках мы даем английское слово

и его перевод; в последней — родственное русское слово.

В слове landowner вам известны все элементы: land земля, own обладать, -

ег суффикс (урок 6).

Заметьте, что слова land и country часто обозначают одно и то же: our land

и this country означают наша страна. Однако land может означать земля, су-

ша, почва; с другой стороны, the country (с артиклем the) часто означает де-

ревня, сельская местность (вообще, а не отдельное селение). Например: Не

lives in the country он живет в деревне (а не в городе).

Существительное translation перевод сопоставьте с глаголом to translate пе-

реводить (урок 5). Сравните также translation перевод со словом трансляция

(передача).

Не забудьте также выучить слова month [mAnT] месяц, yesterday ['jestqdI]

вчера, last [lQ:st] последний, прошлый, ago [q'gqu] тому назад, которые вы

встречали в грамматическом разделе.

УПРАЖНЕНИЯ

1. Проспрягайте глаголы to translate и to write в Past Indefinite в утвердитель-

ной и отрицательной формах.

2. Выпишите из текста урока все нестандартные глаголы в Past indefinite и

дайте их основную словарную форму.

3. Следующие утвердительные предложения сделайте вопросительными:

Ann understood all the words. She showed us her translation.

4. Напишите краткие утвердительные и отрицательные ответы на следующие

lives opposite me. His children speak French and English. We do not write Latin.

Our collective farm (колхоз) is large.

6. Перепишите предложения, вставив вместо точек was или were. Переведите

устно:

7. Перечитайте список нестандартных глаголов, данный на с. 119, закройте

правый столбец и назовите прошедшее время каждого глагола.

8. Расставьте по местам вместо точек слова, данные ниже в алфавитном по-

рядке. Переведите предложения:

SCHOOLS TEACH IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Many Soviet schools teach some subjects (предметы) in foreign languages.

These schools opened not only in such big cities as Moscow and Leningrad but

also in smaller towns in all Soviet Republics.

Geography, history, European literature are some of the subjects which the boys

and girls study in these schools in English, French or German.

These schools have twice as many (вдвое больше) hours for the study of lan-

guages as other schools.

HISTORY

Pony Express (1)

In 1870 there were no railways west of the Missouri River, North America. Very

few people lived there. Mountains, deserts and great canyons (каньон, ущелье)

made the country almost impassable (непроходимый). Many wild animals made it

their home. How could people who lived there send letters to other parts of the

country? The Pony Express made it possible. This was a post service the agents of

which went on horseback in relays (2). The agents were brave men, cool in mo-

ments of danger. They rode at full speed, regardless of (невзирая на) cold or heat

or danger. When a tired man on his tired horse reached the station, he gave his

mail-packet (почтовый мешок) to the next agent, and the fresh man on his fresh

horse went on without a moment's delay (задержка).

ГРАММАТИКА

1. Будущее неопределенное время (The Future Indefinite Tense)

В этом уроке вы познакомитесь с будущим временем the Future ['fju:Cq]

Indefinite Tense. Это время выражает действие, которое должно совершиться

в будущем. Оно образуется с помощью вспомогательных глаголов shall [Sxl]

для первого лица и will [wil] для второго и третьего. Например:

to read читать

I shall read я буду читать

he (she, it) will read он (она, оно) будет читать

we shall read мы будем читать

you will read вы будете читать

they will read они будут читать

Глаголы to be и to have образуют Future Indefinite таким же образом:

Не will be a teacher. Он будет учителем.

I shall have a new dress. У меня будет, новое платье.

Модальные глаголы can, may, must в будущем времени не употребляются.

О том, как выражается возможность и долженствование в будущем, будет

сказано в уроке 18.

Вопросительная форма глаголов в будущем времени образуется пу-

тем перестановки — вспомогательный глагол ставится перед подлежащим.

Например:

Will you work? Будете ли вы работать?

Will they come? Они придут?

Особое значение имеет Future Indefinite в вопросах 1-го лица. Shall I do it?

значит чаще всего не Сделаю ли я это?, а Хотите ли вы, чтобы я это сде-

лал? Это вежливое предложение в форме вопроса.

Shall I open the window? Хотите, я открою окно?

Shall we go together? He пойти ли нам вместе?

Отрицательная форма глаголов в Future Indefinite образуется с по-

мощью not, которое ставится между вспомогательным и смысловым глаго-

лами. Например:

I shall not see it. Я этого не увижу.

Не will not do this. Он этого не сделает.

В разговорной речи shall и will сливаются с местоимением, а в отрица-

тельной форме с not:

I shall превращается в

В кратком ответе повторяется вспомогательный глагол вопроса.

Will he live here? Yes, he will.

Will you do this? Yes, I will.

Will they translate the text? No, they will not (No, they won't).

Shall we buy this book? Yes, we shall. No, we shan't.

Случается, что в предложении сказуемое состоит из двух глаголов в буду-

щем времени. В таких случаях вспомогательный глагол не повторяется:

Не will read and translate the text. Он прочтет и переведет текст.

We shall go and ask him. Мы пойдем и спросим его.

Глаголы в Future Indefinite переводятся на русский язык глаголами в буду-

щем времени совершенного или несовершенного вида в зависимости от об-

щего смысла предложения:

I shall help you. Я вам помогу (соверш. вид).

I shall always help you. Я вам всегда буду помогать (несоверш. вид).

Глаголы в Future Indefinite могут употребляться с точным указанием вре-

мени (датой, часом), а также со словами типа tomorrow [tq'mOrqu] завтра,

the day after tomorrow послезавтра, next [nekst] week (month, year) на буду-

щей неделе (в будущем месяце, году), in an hour через час, in a day (a week, a

month, a year) через день (неделю, месяц, год) и т. д.

Прочтите и переведите:

I'll think about your plan. Will you give me your map? We'll see our friends to-

morrow. They will easily find him. Shall I bring the box here? What will they do?

Will they be here next month? I shall give you the answer in an hour. They will

join us in (an hour) two hours.

1) Числительные количественные

Обратите внимание на следующие особенности:

1) Числительные hundred, thousand и million не принимают окончания -s во

множественном числе.

Однако аналогичные существительные hundred сотня и thousand тысяча

получают это окончание. Сравните: числительные — two hundred persons 200

человек, three thousand books 3000 книг; существительные — hundreds of peo-

ple сотни людей, thousands of books тысячи книг.

2) Между hundred и thousand и следующими за ними названиями десятков

и единиц ставится and:

135 one hundred and thirty-five

1,022 one thousand and twenty-two

3) Слово billion представляет некоторые трудности. Почти всегда оно оз-

начает «миллиард», т.е. тысячу миллионов, или число, представляющее со-

бой единицу с девятью нулями. Так это числительное употребляется в США,

а теперь и в Англии, в частности, когда речь идет о финансах. (Слово milliard,

некогда бытовавшее в Англии, сейчас вышло из употребления.) Однако в на-

учных текстах billion может означать и миллион миллионов, т.е. единицу с 12

нулями. Если это покажется вам неудобным и нелогичным, посмотрите слова

«биллион» и «триллион» в русском словаре и вы увидите, что и в русском

языке существует такая же неопределенность.

4) Разряды многозначных чисел отделяются друг от друга запятой, а не

точкой.

2) Числительные порядковые

Первые три порядковых числительных надо запомнить:

Признаком остальных порядковых числительных является суффикс -th:

Следует обратить внимание на следующее:

1) В слове fifth пятый меняется основа — сравните с five пять, а в twelve

при образовании порядкового числительного ve превращается в f — twelfth.

2) Названия десятков меняют конечное у на ie: forty — fortieth.
