Dam
The
maso/rry
dam
comprises
the following

ponents

at the Ukai Dam
since
1970,
i.e.,
pre-impounding
con-
ditions.
The
observations
indicate
that there
is
no
change
in
the seismic status in the
post-impounding
conditions
even
after the
period
of
5
years.

quantity
of
masonry
and
concrete
involved in
the
masonrv
dam
was 1.51
million
cu
m.

Power House
and Ancillary
Works
The
penstocks
are fabricated
from 18
mm
to 25 mrn
thick
fire box
quality plates.
The
turbines for the
gene:
ration
of
power
have
capacity
of 1,00,000
HP
each
and are
of
Kaplan
type operating under
a head
varying from
57.3
to 34.44
m.
The
alignment
of tail-race
channel
for the
power
house was
finalised
after
model
studies
at Central
Water
and
Power
Research Station,
Pune.
The
channel
53.35
m
wide,
and
995.17
m long
up
to
river,
is
designed for maximum
discharge
of
736.23
cumecs.
The
channel involved 835.34
M
cm excavation
in
overburden
and 588.98
M
cm of excavation
in
rock.

earth
dam
which
is 4058
m long
(excluding
small
saddles)
comprises

involved in earth
dam
is
thus
23.67 million
cu
m.
5.4
Diversion Channel
In
view
of
large
quantities
of
work
(7.36
M
cu
m)
involved
in earth dam construction
in the
river
portion,
the
construction
period
was
spread
over
three
working
seasons.
As
the
floods
could not
be
allowed
to
pass
over
the
partially
raised earthen
dam,
in the
inter-
vening two
monsoons the
river
had
to
be
suitably
divert-ed
through an
open cut diversion
channel.
