The capacity to have any 1 of 20 different amino
acid residues at each position in a protein
sequence with physicochemical properties span-
ning from very oil-like to vinegar-like, as demon-
strated in Figure 2.1, and the simultaneous
capacity to retain complete integrity with respect
to molecular asymmetry (see Chapter 3, section
3.1.6 and Figure 3.3) combine to result in the
remarkable capabiUties of protein sequences.
Lest one gets lost in the sense of improbability
of such sequences, however, their biosynthesis
requires such an extraordinary amount of energy
in total number of ATP molecules consumed for
the addition of each amino acid residue that
their construction is more aptly described as bla-
tantly extravagant. This constitutes the central
message of Chapter 4.
