Romania is situated in the south-east of Europe. It has an area of
237,000 square kilometres. It is bordered to the north by the Ukraine,
to the south by Bulgaria, to the west by Hungary, and to the south
west by Serbia, while the Black Sea fo rms the south-easte fr on
tier. Romania is shaped like an amphitheatre: in the middle are the
Carpathian mountains, then there is a region of hills, fo llowed by
an area of plains. The River Danube runs through Romania fo r a
distance of 1,075 kilometres. Romania has approximately 23 million
inhabitants. Bucharest is the capital and has a population of around
two million. Other large towns are Cluj, Timişoara, Iaşi and
Constanţa.

Romanian food reects the many foreign inuences that have been
brought to bear on the Romanians down the centuries. You will
nd that their cuisine is a mixture of French, Turkish and Viennese
specialities. Below is a sample menu that you are likely to meet in
a Romanian restaurant (page 55).
More plurals
As mentioned in Unit 2, in Romanian the plural is formed
according to the gender of the noun. Therefore:
Feminine nouns ending in -ă form their plural by replacing the -ă
by -e:

or by oi:
