', 'an'
You will probably have noticed the forms:
o viză
o bancă
un englez
un american
o and un both mean 'a', 'an' and are known as the indenite article.
R
omanian has these forms because, unlike in English, Romanian
nouns cae in three types, known as genders: masculine, feminine
a
nd neuter. Masculine and neuter nouns are preceded by un, while
feminine nouns are preceded by o. A useful tip for identiing femi
nine nouns is that they of ten end in -ă.
Remember that o and un also represent the number 'one' - sa
t
hat o bancă means both 'a bank' and 'one bank'.

Romanian nouns have distinct endings to indicate more than one
object or person and, unlike in English, they vary according to
gender. Here are some plural forms which we met in unit 1:

When expressing 'the' (known as the denite article) in Romanian
the word arder is different to that in English. Romanian reverses
the order and attaches the element meaning 'the' to the end of the
noun. And again, because Romanian nouns coe in three types,
so the ending of the noun will reect the particular type or gender.

This is because, after a word like 'in', 'at, or 'on' (known as
prepositions), Romanian does not express the denite article unless
the noun is described in some way, e.g. it is followed by a name,
as in:

or is followed by an adjective:
la poşta centrală
