5 The research project

Look at the following example in which three researchers working in the field of for-
eign language learning, Tomoko Yashima, Lori Zenuk-Nishide and Kazuaki Shimizu
discussed the limitations of their study (2004: 144):
Limitations of the current study need to be discussed. Neither Yashima (2002a)
nor this study sufficiently addresses the relationship between L2 competence
and L2 self-confidence. This needs to be explored further. Methodologically, it
will be necessary to reconstruct for adolescent learners a few of the variables
used in the current study whose reliability indices were not high enough,
including interest in international vocation/activities. Alternative methods of
assessing frequency/amount of communication as a behavioural manifestation
should be considered, for example, classroom observation and observation of
communicative events. Combining other’s ratings and self-ratings will result in
a more comprehensive assessment of reciprocal communication behavior.
Three limitations require mention. The process of gifted enrolment occurs
through a few sequential steps. Teachers nominate children, children take
tests, parents advocate for their children, and resources in a particular school
fluctuate. With this in mind, the first limitation is that the present study does
not account for all the modes or factors involved in this selection process . . .
Second, because this study had fewer children from the lower SES background
than the original longitudinal sample these findings may not generalize to
those students that are most transient in a district. Third, the district had a
higher enrolment rate than state and national averages. Thus, many children in
this district were given the opportunity to participate in the gifted program
whereas many fewer children might have been afforded this opportunity in
other districts. Therefore, these findings may be less generalizable to districts
with substantially lower enrolment rates.
Notice how they critique an issue related to two of their variables (i.e, Neither
Yashima (2002a) nor this study sufficiently addresses the relationship between L2
competence and L2 self-confidence), the reliability of their instruments, and the
assessment methods that they used. Their message? If they can improve these
points in future studies, their results will be more trustworthy and accurate.
Timothy Curby et al. (2008: 741) investigated how task orientation and peer sociabil-
ity during kindergarten and first grade influenced their chances of enrolment in a
programme for gifted children in the USA. Look at the limitations that they identified
in their study:
Their first limitation (the present study does not account for all the modes or factors
involved in this selection process) is the same as the study by Yashima et al.: they
left some potentially important variables out of their study. Their second limitation
concerned a sampling problem – there was an insufficient number of children from
the lower SES background in the study. Their third limitation concerned a second
sampling problem – the school district had a higher than average enrolment rate.
