I Прочитайте текст.
Christmas is a great religious holiday. As most Americans are
Christians so it is widely celebrated in America. On this day many go to
Church services to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. There are many
Christmas traditions which are very popular, for example to give presents
to the children with the help of Santa Claus, who is said to live at the
North Pole, where he makes toys for children during the whole year.
Grown-ups also exchange presents and Christmas greeting cards.
Americans decorate their homes for Christmas. They have a Christmas
tree, which they decorate with toys and small lights. The tree may be a real
fir tree from the forest or an artificial one. Gifts are given not only to
children, members of the family and close friends. They are given to
people who do a lot of work for other people, for example, the postman,
milkman. Many firms give their workers gifts for extra money for good
work. Christmas is also a time when Americans do a lot of charity work.
They help the poor people, organize Christmas dinners for the homeless
people. Much help is given to sick people, invalids, people of old age.
During Christmas you can meet a lot of people in the streets who collect
money for those who are in need.

1. People have thought that the environment is an unlimited source of
resources, that the atmosphere, forests, rivers and seas are capable of
absorbing all wastes. The environment supplies the economy of any
country with its resources such as timber, minerals and oil. As a result,
environment is unable to absorb all its wastes.

2. For example, waste gases cause acid rains; this leads to forest
damage and therefore reduces the resources of forests. Another problem is
water shortage resulting from unlimited use of it. The third one is
destroying the ozone layer of the Earth through pollution from plants and
cars. One more problem is damage to wildlife. It is possible that some
kinds of animals can disappear due to people’s activities.
3. Some territories in Russia are also suffering environmental
problems. Many of these problems have been caused by economic
activities. Many forests in the north of European Russia and the Far East
are under threat.
4. If we want to live in a healthier world we must learn to use the
environment carefully and protect it from damage caused by our activities.
Otherwise very soon we will have no world to live in.

The Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell never planned to be an inventor, he wanted
to be a musician or a teacher of deaf people. The subjects that he studied at
school included music, art, literature, Latin and Greek. They didn’t include
German, which all scientists used in their books.
When Alexander was only sixteen, he became a teacher in boys’
school in Scotland. He liked teaching there but still he wanted to become a
teacher of deaf people. He read all the books about sound that he could
find and started to work on some of his own experiments. At twenty-five

Alexander became interested in finding a way of sending human voice
through an electric wire. The parents of his pupils contributed money for
the equipment. He found an assistant, Tom Watson, who worked in an
electric shop. For two years Tom and Alexander had been working
together to build a machine that people could use to talk one to another
over long distances. One day they were working on a new transmitter.
Tom Watson, who was alone in another room, heard a voice. The voice
was coming through a wire to a receiver on the table. The voice was of
Alexander Bell. It was saying. “Come here, Mr Watson. I need you.”
