AE ecological state in such units is greatly determined by air quality. Air quality is
defined by its chemical composition, physical characteristics and contamination content. An
environment which is purified from harmful particles (dust, aerosols, radioactive particle,
carbon black, lead, etc.) and does not contain odors, ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur and nitric
oxide, allergens and biological agents, under the conditions of providing standardized physical
characteristics: temperature, humidity, high concentration of negative air ions of atmospheric
oxygen which have flow velocity from 2,0 to 2,2 cm
2
/(Vs) is physiologically favorable and safe
air for man.
Air in the units with AE should support man’s vital functions and exclude negative
influence of different factors on health. While solving the problem of air quality in the units
with AE a special attention should be paid to air physical characteristics, its air ion content and
unipolarity of air ions with different flow velocity. Air ion content is an effective factor
demonstrating environment state and purity of the unit air.
Physiologically unfavorable air ion environment is observed in the units with AE which
contain low quality air, characterized by low concentration of light negative air ions of oxygen
(less than 250 ion/cm
2
), significant concentrations of light positive air ions (more than 500
ion/cm
2
) and heavy air ions of the two polarities (more than 1000 ion/cm
2
). Such an
environment provokes different diseases characterized by thrombohemorrhagic syndrome due to
loss of negative charge of the organism. Such units need control of physical characteristics of
the air.
Low quality of air in the units with AE brings to worsening of man’s health and can
exhibit a number of acute, chronic symptoms and different specific diseases. The main
symptoms and diseases connected with low quality air in the units with AE are the following:
• organs of vision – dryness, itch, lachrymation, reddening;
• upper airways - dryness, nosebleed, sore throat, nose discharge, stuffiness in nose;
• lungs – air shortage, chest obstruction, hoarseness, dehumidified cough, bronchitis;
• coverlet – dryness, reddening, skin itch;
• general - headache, asthenia, sleepiness, disordered attention concentration,
irritation, nervousness, giddiness, sickness.
Low quality of air in units with AE increases risk factor of development the most
widely spread diseases (asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, allergic pneumonia) and diseases of
unknown chemical or physical origin, including cancer.
Nowadays the problem of air quality increase and creation of the favorable
environment in the units with AE took on special significance. It is explained by ecological
alarm conditions which have resulted in many Russian cities in latest years. Such environment
characteristics as air purity, chemical content and physical properties have changed. These
changes are explained by different factors which have natural, man-caused and anthropogenic
origin. The air quality problem-solving in the units with AE should be considered in connection
with change of the natural environment, the main source of fresh air supply to the units with
AE. While solving this problem we can not exclude purposeful environment contamination with
pathogenic microorganisms resulting from eventual acts of terrorism. At present the problems of
biological safety of environment in the units with AE are the issue of a day.
In recent years in Moscow occurred extreme ecological situation as regards to
atmospheric air contamination. This situation may be considered as critical. The main
contaminants are formaldehyde, phenol, suspended particles, ammonia, carbon disulfide.
The main share of hazardous substances is due to carbon monoxides, nitric oxides,
carbohydrates. Besides, daily contaminants emission from automobiles counts not less than
33,3 tons of sulfurous anhydride, 68,8 kgs of lead and 0,8 tons of carbon black. All this affects
