Position of Adjectives
Sei ricco/a o povero/a? Are you rich or poor? Sei giovane o vecchio/a? Are you
young or old? The adjectives used in these sentences are descriptive. Some descrip-
tive adjectives can come either before or after a noun. Here are some common
adjectives you may have already encountered:
bello beautiful grande big, large, great
brutto ugly piccolo little, small
buono good povero poor
caro dear ricco rich
cattivo bad vecchio old
giovane young
A few of these adjectives change in meaning depending on their position in a
sentence.
È un ragazzo povero. He is a poor boy. (meaning: not wealthy)
È un povero ragazzo. He is a poor boy. (meaning: deserving of pity)
È un amico vecchio. He is an old friend. (meaning: in age)
È un vecchio amico. He is an old friend. (meaning: for many years)
Descriptive adjectives can also be separated from the noun they modify by what
is called a linking verb. The most common linking verbs are the following three:
essere to be
sembrare to seem
diventare to become
Quella donna è ricca. That woman is rich.
Quell’uomo sembra giovane. That man seems young.
Questa macchina sta diventando This car is becoming old.
vecchia.

Adjectives used in this way are known as predicate adjectives because they occur in
the predicate slot—after the verb that links them to the noun they modify.
And fi nally, when these adjectives are accompanied by an adverb, another adjec-
tive, or some other part of speech, they must follow the noun.
È un simpatico ragazzo. He is a pleasant boy.
But:
È un ragazzo molto simpatico. He is a very pleasant boy.
È un ragazzo simpatico e bravo. He is a pleasant and good boy.

Practice saying the following sentences out loud.
Il tuo amico è bello o brutto? Is your friend nice looking or ugly?
Il mio amico sembra bello. My friend seems nice looking.
Hai buoni o cattivi amici? Do you have good or bad friends?

BUONO
• When buono is placed before masculine nouns beginning with z, s
consonant, gn, and ps, its forms are as follows:
Singular Plural
un buono zio a good uncle dei buoni zii some good uncles
un buono studente a good student dei buoni studenti some good students
• Before masculine nouns beginning with any other consonant or any vowel,
buono takes on the following forms:
Singular Plural
un buon medico a good doctor dei buoni medici some good doctors
un buon amico a good friend dei buoni amici some good friends
• Before feminine nouns beginning with any consonant, the forms are as
follows:

una buona pasta a good pastry delle buone paste some good pastries

• Before feminine nouns beginning with any vowel, the forms are as follows:

Don’t forget that when buono is placed after the noun, it is treated as a normal
descriptive adjective ending in -o.
BELLO
• When bello is placed before masculine nouns beginning with z, s
consonant, gn,and ps, its forms are as follows:

• Before masculine nouns beginning with any other consonant, its forms are
as follows:

• Before masculine nouns beginning with any vowel, the forms for bello are
as follows:

• Before feminine nouns beginning with any consonant, its forms are as
follows:

• Before feminine nouns beginning with any vowel, the forms for bello are as

And don’t forget! If placed after the noun, bello is treated like a normal descrip-
tive adjective ending in -o.
GRANDE
Grande has the optional forms of gran (before a masculine singular noun begin-
ning with any consonant except z, s consonant, gn, and ps), and grand’ (before
any singular noun beginning with a vowel). Otherwise, it is treated as a normal
adjective ending in -e. There is only one plural form: grandi.

Human Body
It is important to be able to name the parts of the human body (il corpo umano), or
at least some of them. The following is a list of some common body vocabulary
words:

i capelli hair (on the head) la mano hand
il collo neck il naso nose
il dito fi n g e r l’occhio eye
la faccia face l’orecchio ear

Like the English nouns memorandum and compendium, which have the plural
forms memoranda and compendia (derived from Latin words), Italian also has a
few nouns whose plural forms end in -a. In Italian these nouns are masculine in the
singular but feminine in the plural.

There are not too many of these nouns, and most refer to parts of the human body.
