— No. We lived far out in the country. School was very important to me. My
parents tell me to study.
— Dad, but teachers are so strict now.
— No, they aren't. The rules were very strict in my school. The students
stay after classes if they did something wrong.
— And uniforms you wear uniforms at school?
— No, we wear uniforms. Our school was very small. There was
only one room in our school-house so our teacher teach children of
different ages in the same class.

Fred is eighteen years old. He is a cadet at
Military Academy.
This is a letter to his friend Mike who is a
student at university.
Hi, Mike
How are you doing? Do you enjoy your life?
Here I am in the academy. You know it is so
different from my dreams. Life here isn't romantic
at all but very difficult. We are busy every minute
of the day. There are a lot of strict rules and we
have to obey them.
I have to get up at 6 o'clock. I have to wash
with cold water even on winter days. We have to
stand at attention every time an officer comes in.
We have to attend all classes and we can't miss
them.
We have to do a lot of physical exercise to keep fit and strong.
The cadet uniform is very important. Our uniform has to be perfect all the
time. I have to polish my shoes about three times a day. We have to wear dif-
ferent uniforms on different days.
Is your life the same? Do you have to live in the barracks as we do?
Ps. The only advantage is the time out. When we have a chance to go out
to town in our uniforms all the girls are ours. They forget about their boyfriends
the moment they see us. You know I wasn't so popular at school.
See you at Christmas,
Fred
