The Prepositions в and на
These two prepositions are used to indicate location. В usually shows location in
or within an enclosed space (the library, Moscow, the United States, the cafeteria,
July, the magazine, a good mood, the store, a black dress, ecstasy); на is used in the
meaning on (the table, the floor, your nose, the wall, the door, the street, a bench,
the Moon, Mars).
NOTE: В will become во in front of consonant clusters, especially those
beginning with the sounds [f/v]: во Флорñде (in Florida), во Фрáнции (in
France), во дворé (in the yard), во всём (in everything), во всûком
слÿчае (in any case), во-вторπх (in the second place).
Both в and на may be used to translate at. На is used to express at a certain
function, event, or occasion where people gather to do something: на собрá нии,
на вечерñнке, на пóхоронах, на лéкции, на концéрте, на свáдьбе, на рабó те,
на занûтиях, на урóке, на óпере, на экзáмене, на конферéнции
; or with cer-
tain public buildings where на may be translated as at or in: на пóчте, на
стáнции, на вπставке, на вокзáле, на телегрáфе, на предприûтии, на завóде,
на фáбрике.
В is used to translate at where English may also allow in. Russian perceives
the location as within an enclosed or circumscribed building or place rather than
at a broader location, as does English. The following phrases will all use в to trans-
late at: at the university, at school, at the library, at Princeton, at the movies, at the
drugstore, at the bank, and at the store.
NOTE: To translate “at” a person’s house, use the preposition у plus
genitive case:
Вчера он был у Ивана (He was at Ivan’s yesterday).
