Ask her if she owns the bar, then proceed to expound your
own ideas about customer service and how customers
should be treated. The customer should be king and should
not have to wait for 10 minutes to be waited on, you say,
especially when there are no other customers?
Quickly realise that you are in Portugal and that you
should therefore adapt to the local pace and customs.

advantages of a slow pace of life, where people take time
to play cards while at work?

the fact that service varies greatly in Portugal. It would be best
to adopt a more tolerant attitude.

People rarely complain, in part because the Portuguese are
discreet and don’t want to attract attention in public, and in
part because they know that a complaint will achieve very
little. Since slow service is by no means an exception in
Portugal,

function of their job.
SITUATION 2
It is one of those rare cold winter days, and a friend offers
to drop you off in a small historic town on his way to an
evening class and later pick you up at an arranged time. You
have been planning an excursion to this little historic town
for quite some time and you are grateful that your friend
can give you a ride. After an enjoyable afternoon, you arrive
timely at the specified location and wait by the side of the
road for about 20 minutes, before deciding to call him on
his cell phone. Your friend is apologetic and tells you that
he will pick you up in half an hour. You decide to wait at a
