you will mostly fi nd A taxis, which do not have a sign on the
roof but display the letter A on the door. These taxis, mainly for
rural traffi c, do not use a meter, but charge a fare according to
distance. A tip of 10 per cent of the fare is customary.
Buses and Streetcars
Portugal’s cities all have a well-developed public transport
system, mostly buses. In Porto and Lisbon, a few streetcar
lines remain from the old days but they are plagued with
delays caused by cars parked too close to the tracks. Still,
even though buses are faster, a visit to Lisbon would not be
complete without a ride in one of the old streetcars. It also
happens that these streetcars lead through some of Lisbon’s
most charming neighbourhoods, such as Alfama, Mouraria,
Graça and the Bairro Alto. Tickets purchased in advance are
much cheaper than those bought on the bus or streetcar.
Metro
The Lisbon subway (‘metro’ in Portuguese) has four lines that
connect outer districts with the city centre. It is in operation
from about 6:00 am to 1:00 am, with less frequent service
at weekends and holidays. For the metro you can buy single
or multiple-ride tickets, as well as a three-day tourist pass
and a monthly pass. A suburban train service called Metro
Sul do Tejo (MST) that heads to destinations south of the
Tejo River is in the planning stages. Seven light rail lines are
planned for Porto, some of which are already operating. They
connect suburbs and surrounding cities with Porto, with
several underground stops in Porto’s city centre.
Long-Distance Bus Travel
Express routes between Portugal’s major cities use modern
buses, and service is fairly effi cient and fast. On the other
hand, getting around rural Portugal takes much fl exibility,
patience, time, and sometimes, tenacity. Each region has
its major bus companies that connect the major towns, but
connections to another region or district are often slow with
numerous layovers. While it is certainly worthwhile and
rewarding to explore Portugal’s remote villages and towns,
