Preface
¡Hola, amigos!, Seventh Edition, Advantage Series, continues to be the complete, flexible
program that has made it a successful introduction to Spanish for beginning college and
university students. It presents the basics of Spanish grammar using a balanced, eclectic
approach that stresses all four skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The program
has always emphasized the active, practical use of Spanish for communication in high-
frequency situations. The Advantage Series features an updated layout and additional practice,
all in a fresh Worktext format, allowing access to both the textbook and Student Activities
Manual within one cover. The program’s goal is to help you achieve linguistic proficiency and
cultural awareness, and to motivate you to continue your study of the Spanish language and
the many cultures in which it is spoken.
The Student Worktext
Each ¡Hola, amigos!, Seventh Edition, Advantage Series Worktext is organized into four units,
each containing two thematically related lessons. The Student Activities Manual, which is
bound into the back of your Worktext, offers a variety of writing activities—sentence
completion, matching, sentence transformation, and illustration-based exercises—that
provide further practice and reinforcement of concepts presented in the textbook. Each lesson
includes a crossword puzzle for vocabulary review and a reading comprehension passage. The
laboratory activities, intended for use with the SAM Audio files, emphasize listening and
speaking skills. Each of the four units contains the following features.
Unit-Opener Spread
Each unit begins with a list of communicative objectives for the two lessons included in that
unit. This list serves to focus your attention on important linguistic functions and vocabulary
you will encounter and to help you gain a sense of accomplishment when you finish a unit.
Captioned photos and maps give you a first impression of the countries presented in each unit.
Detalles culturales

These short culture notes written in easy-to-read Spanish promote
cultural awareness in the language-learning process. They can be found throughout the
entire unit and will give you important and interesting cultural information that helps
integrate the learning of language with the learning of culture.
Para hablar del tema: Vocabulario
All new words and expressions introduced in the conversations are listed by parts of speech or
under the general headings Cognados and Otras palabras y expresiones. You should learn the
entries in these lists for active use. The Amplíe su vocabulario section that follows expands on
the thematic vocabulary introduced in the dialogues.
Para practicar el vocabulario
This practice section immediately follows the vocabulary presentation and encourages you to
use the expressions you have just learned in a meaningful way.

strategies and the selections are followed by comprehension and personalized questions for
writing practice or discussion.
El mundo hispánico
This section, written in easy-to-read Spanish, provides an integrated cultural presentation of
the countries and regions presented on the unit opener and throughout the lessons. It offers an
overview of the locale in which the introductory dialogues were set, with attention to such
details as climate, points of interest, customs, politics, economy, and inhabitants. It will also
inform you about prevailing customs in the Spanish-speaking world that relate to the lesson
themes. A map highlighting important geographic locations can be found on the unit opener
spread. Color photos visually depict the country or custom(s) discussed.
Tome este examen
After each unit, these self-tests review and synthesize important vocabulary and grammatical
structures you have learned in that unit. Because cultural awareness is as important as
linguistic competence, the self-tests will also check your knowledge of cultural concepts.
Organized by lesson, the self-tests quickly enable you to determine what material you have
already mastered and which concepts you need to target for further review. An answer key for
immediate verification is provided in Appendix D of the textbook portion of your worktext.

The Student Activities Manual
To use this integral component of the ¡Hola, amigos! program to best advantage, it is
important that you understand its organization.
The Workbook section, which is bound into the back of this Worktext, offers a variety of
writing activities—sentence completion, matching, sentence transformation, and illustration-
based exercises—that provide further practice and reinforcement of concepts presented in the
textbook portion. Each lesson includes a crossword puzzle for vocabulary review and a reading
comprehension passage. Writing strategies and topics appear in each lesson to further writing

The Laboratory Manual section opens with an Introduction to Spanish Sounds designed
to make learners aware of the differences between Spanish and English pronunciation. Each
regular lesson of the Laboratory Manual includes pronunciation, structure, listening- and
speaking practice, illustration-based listening comprehension, and dictation exercises to be
used in conjunction with the audio program.
The Workbook Activities
The Workbook Activities will help to develop your reading and writing skills by providing
practice in using the structures and vocabulary from the textbook. The activities in the Para
practicar section range from fill-ins and sentence completion to more complex tasks such as
writing original sentences and short paragraphs. A crossword puzzle in each lesson, with clues
in Spanish, offers a vocabulary control check and an opportunity to test your spelling abilities.
Each Workbook lesson includes a Para leer reading in which key lesson vocabulary and
structures reappear in a new context, followed by questions to check comprehension. Each
lesson includes a Para escribir writing task that presents a topic related to the theme of the
lesson and writing tips or strategies to help you develop your writing skills.
The Laboratory Activities
The Laboratory Activities, intended for use with the SAM Audio files for the Seventh Edition of
¡Hola, amigos!, emphasize listening and speaking skills. The following sections are included
for each textbook lesson.
Pronunciación: Words, phrases, and sentences that practice particular sounds or general
pronunciation and intonation are read with pauses for you to repeat what you hear.
Diálogos: The dialogues from the textbook lesson are read for you to pause and repeat.
Listen to the dialogues twice. During the first reading, you should listen carefully to the

a second time, pause the audio after each sentence and repeat after the speaker.

your understanding of the dialogues. Check your responses carefully against those provided
on the recording.
Puntos para recordar: These exercises provide listening and speaking practice and test your
mastery of the grammar topics presented in each lesson. A model for each exercise in this
section is read on the SAM Audio files and printed in the Laboratory Activities pages to guide
you in your responses. The correct response to each item is provided in the audio files.
Díganos: “Real-life” questions related to the lesson theme provide additional listening and
speaking practice.
Ejercicios de comprensión: These listening comprehension exercises check your ability to
apply the Spanish you are learning to new situations. First, you will hear three descriptions
for each illustration in the Laboratory Activities pages and will indicate the letter that
corresponds to the correct description. Answers to each of the items are provided in the
SAM Audio files. In the second exercise, you must confirm whether each of a series of
sentences is logical or illogical.
Para escuchar y escribir: A dictation concludes the Laboratory Activities for each lesson so
you can check your ability to reproduce in writing what you hear in the audio files.
Answers to all Workbook and Lab Manual Activities are provided at your instructor’s
discretion.
Consistent use of the Laboratory Activities for each lesson will help you to develop your
listening and speaking skills in Spanish to meet the objectives of the ¡Hola, amigos! program.
By the end of the course, you should be able to understand the essence of a conversation on
topics covered by the textbook by native speakers of Spanish conversing at normal speed. You
should also be able to make yourself understood to native speakers used to dealing with
foreigners when you converse on these topics, using the vocabulary and structures you have
learned.
Try to complete all of the Workbook and Laboratory activities for each lesson. As you
become more familiar with the program, you will find them helpful in assessing your
achievements and in targeting the specific lesson features that require extra review. Learning a
foreign language is a gradual process that requires a consistent, steady commitment of time.
Completing the activities will help you to use your time productively by determining which
material you have already mastered and which requires additional study.

The video features footage of locations presented in the El mundo
hispánico sections. The footage in each lesson consists of two parts, each part being
approximately two to four minutes long. In the first part you will view a situational
dialogue featuring recurring characters demonstrating everyday life. In the second part
you will be able to see and hear country-specific footage for selected countries, ethnic
groups, and regions presented in the units. Both parts are designed to develop your
listening skills and cultural awareness as you view diverse images of the Hispanic world
and Hispanic life and lifestyles. Previewing, postviewing, and expansion activities along
with active vocabulary lists are correlated to each video segment.

Pronunciation exercises at the beginning of each lesson feature practice
