Tom came from a small village in Wales. He lived there with his mother and
worked on a small family farm. However he never felt happy because he dreamt
of different places. He thought about London or some other big city.
"Life in a big city is so interesting. People go to museums and picture gal-
leries every week. And every night after work young people visit some exciting
places — discos, night-clubs, restaurants. And here the life is boring."
He saved some money every week and when he was 20 he said good-bye
to his mother and left for London.
Soon he found a small flat far from the city centre and began to work in a
bank. But his life was different from his dreams. It took him an hour to get
home from his work. He was so tired of noisy crowds and traffic in the evening
that he didn't want to go to all those "exciting" places but just relaxed at home
in front of the TV. He felt very lonely too. In the morning on his way to work he
was thinking of his mother, his friends and his life at home. He missed his vil-
lage, fresh air and his mother's delicious food.
Some time later he bought a car. The next day it took him an hour and a
half to drive to work because of heavy traffic. His boss didn't like it at all. The
following day Tom left home earlier but he was driving around his bank from
8.50 to 9.15 because there was no parking place. He was late for work again.
