This book is a slightly revised version of my doctoral dissertation, submitted in August, 1991 to the Linguistics Department at Stanford University. Once again I would like to thank some of the people who have helped me in various ways with this project. Two people in particular have had a major influence on this study: my advisor, Joan Bresnan, and my Tagalog teacher, Mrs. Linda Victoire. Without either of them, this work would have been impossible.
The other members of my committee—Paul Kiparsky, Ivan Sag and Peter Sells—have also been a great help and have made significant contributions to the results of this study. I have also benefitted from the comments of a number of linguists who read various portions of this work in its early stages. At the risk of offending those who are inadvertendy omitted from the list, I would like to thank Paul Schachter, Paz Naylor, Barry Miller, Lisa Travis, Elmer Wolfenden, Prof. V V Ivanov, Tom Payne, Donna Gerdts, Matt Shibatani, Emily Sityar, Steve Quakenbush, Evan Antworth, Rudy Barlaan, Alex Alsina, and Michael Boutin,
Much of the data for this study is drawn from published sources. Almost all of the examples for which no other source is cited were provided by Linda Victoire, a native of Rizal. Mrs. Nenita "Charlie" Gravador, from Bulakan, and Mr. Tim Feando, from Metro Manila, also provided native-speaker judgements to help me check my data. All remaining errors of fact or interpretation are entirely due to my own limitations.
