Melvin P. Unger holds the Riemenschneider Chair in Music at the
Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory in Berea, Ohio, where he
serves as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and founding
conductor of the B-W Singers. He is also the conductor of the Singers’
Club of Cleveland, a male chorus serving the city’s greater metropolitan
area since 1891. For many years he conducted the Da Camera Singers
of Edmonton, Canada. His choral groups have appeared at conventions
and festivals in Canada, the United States, and Europe.
Dr. Unger holds degrees in choral music from the Universities of
Saskatchewan (Canada), Oregon, and Illinois. He also studied conduct-
ing with Helmuth Rilling at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende
Kunst (Frankfurt) while on a scholarship from the Deutscher Akade-
mischer Austauschdienst.
His previous publications include four books: The German Choral
Church Compositions of Johann David Heinichen (1683–1729); Hand-
book to Bach’s Sacred Cantata Texts: An Interlinear Translation with
Reference Guide to Biblical Quotations and Allusions; Performance
Practice of the Instrumental-Vocal Works of Johann Sebastian Bach (a
translation of Karl Hochreither’s work); and J. S. Bach’s Major Works
for Voices and Instruments: A Listener’s Guide. His academic awards
include the American Bach Society’s William H. Scheide Fellowship,
two American Choral Directors Association’s Research Awards, and
the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors Book Award.
