THE PERFORMING ARTS
A Diverse Scene
Lisbon, as the capital, has
doubtlessly Portugal’s most lively performing arts scene,
and there are numerous performance venues all over the
city. Among the most notable are the Teatro Nacional Dona
Maria II (theatre productions), the Teatro Nacional São
Carlos (concerts and operas), the Centro Cultural de Belém
(a varied programme of music, dance, exhibits and theatre)
and the Coliseu dos Recreios (regular concerts of national
and international stars).
Porto is home to Portugal’s second largest performing arts
scene. The main performance venues are the Rivoli Teatro
Municipal, the Coliseu do Porto and the Teatro Nacional São
João. Many small towns also host concerts, music festivals
and theatre performances.
Portugal has several ballet and dance ensembles which
have a steady presence in performing arts venues in Lisbon,
Porto and elsewhere. Among them are the Companhia
Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo, the Companhia de
Dança de Lisboa, the Companhia Nacional de Bailado (CNB)
and the Ballet Gulbenkian, which all perform both classical
ballets as well as experimental and modern choreographies.
The Companhia Paulo Ribeiro is among Portugal’s best-
known small dance companies, and it always surprises with
new and experimental projects.
Portugal only has a small tradition in theatre and drama.
Nonetheless, every Portuguese city has at least one stately
theatre and several small stages with a diverse and interesting
repertoire. The plays of 16th century dramatist Gil Vicente are
still widely popular and his plays are still regularly performed
all over the country. Portugal’s theatre productions include
many international plays, and plays by contemporary
Portuguese playwrights are also regularly performed
especially at the many small stages, which often have a more
experimental scope than the large national theatres.
A notable private institution is the
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation,
which has its own concert hall
with an orchestra, choir and
ballet, and hosts numerous
performances of dance, music
and theatre.
