Thanks to her magnifi cent voice and soulful interpretations
she soon became the undisputed ‘Queen of Fado’ and was
somewhat of a cultural ambassador for Portugal during the
Salazar years by making fado known around the world.
During the Estado Novo, the fado tunes were predominantly
romantic, excessively nostalgic and they always glamorised
Portugal. After the 1974 revolution, fado was shunned
for a number of years as it reminded too many people of
the dictatorship.
The Fado of Coimbra
A distinct fado tradition began to develop in the city of
Coimbra between 1870 and 1880, when students from Lisbon
introduced the fado there. Coimbra’s fados are nostalgic
ballads about the loves and lives of university students sung
by groups of male students. Although the fado tradition of
Coimbra may seem anachronistic at times, with groups of
men in their traditional black university outfi ts, the Coimbra
fado continues to be renewed by successive generations of
students, who enter the university and perform the music
that glorifi es student life, music and love.
Fado Live and Alive
Although fado today is often performed for tourists in so-
called fado clubs, there are also numerous tascas, small
taverns in Lisbon’s Alfama and Bairro Alto districts, where
the locals crowd together to sing fado for each other, over a
glass of watered-down wine and much sentiment of saudade.
There is a surprisingly large number of young people that
crowd into the tascas to hear fado, which is a sure sign that
fado has succeeded in bridging the generation gap and also
appeals to younger people. This
is certainly in part thanks to a
young generation of charismatic
fado singers that has come of
age since the death of Amália
Rodrigues in 1999. Many of
these young talents do not shy
away from experimenting with
One of the fi rst famous
fado
singers was the legendary Maria
Severa (1820–1846), a prostitute
of Lisbon’s Mouraria district.
Her musical performances
were apparently so captivating
that a nobleman, the Count of
Marialva, fell head over heels in
love with her.
