g The Spanish consonant g is similar to the English g sound in the
word guy except before e or i.

j The sound of Spanish j (or g before e and i) is similar to a strongly
exaggerated English h sound.

b, v There is no difference in sound between Spanish b and v. Both
letters are pronounced alike. At the beginning of an utterance or
after m or n, b and v have a sound identical to the English b
sound in the word boy.

When pronounced between vowels, the Spanish b and v sound is
produced by bringing the lips together but not closing them, so
that some air may pass through.
sábado autobús yo voy su barco
y, ll In most countries, Spanish ll and y have a sound similar to the
English sound in the word yes.

Note: When it stands alone or is at the end of a word, Spanish y
is pronounced like the vowel i.

r The sound of Spanish r is similar to the English dd sound in the
word ladder.

rr Spanish rr and also r in an initial position and after n, l, or s are
pronounced with a very strong trill. This trill is produced by
bringing the tip of the tongue near the alveolar ridge and letting it
vibrate freely while the air passes through the mouth.

s Spanish s is represented in most of the Spanish world by the
letters s, z, and c before e or i. The sound is very similar to the
English sibilant s in the word sink.
