Для того щоб легко засвоїти, як будуються запитання в англій-

ській мові, необхідно зрозуміти і запам’ятати, як будуються за-

гальні запитання. Взагалі в англійській мові розрізняють чоти-

ри типи питальних речень: загальні, альтернативні, спеціальні

та роз’єднувальні (уточнюючі).

27.1. Загальні запитання

General (Yes / No) Questions

Загальні запитання, як випливає з назви, — це такі, що

потребують відповіді “Так” або “Ні”. Порядок слів загального

запитання фактично є основою всіх інших типів. Загальні за пи-

тання будуються або зміною місць підмета і присудка (дієслова),

або з додаванням допоміжного дієслова перед підметом.

Підмет і присудок (тобто дієслово) міняють місцями, якщо

це дієслово to be (як допоміжне чи самостійне) або модальне

дієслово.

The weather is fine. Is the weather fine?

The days are nice. Are the days nice?

The sun is shining. Is the sun shining?

The birds are singing. Are the birds singing?

Tom can play the guitar. Can Tom play the guitar?

I can help you. Can I help you?

Students should work hard. Should students work hard?

You were absent yesterday. Were you absent yesterday?

Peter was tired. Was Peter tired?

They aren’t coming today. Aren’t they coming today?

В усіх інших випадках перед підметом ставлять допоміжне

дієслово.

Do you speak Ukrainian?

Does Jim speak Ukrainian?

Did you do your homework yesterday?

Have you got any brothers or sisters?

Has your boss come back from the business trip?

Will you be tomorrow at the meeting?

Will Sarah be holding the meeting?

У короткій відповіді повторюють дієслово, яке стояло перед

підметом.

Is English easy? — Yes, it is. No, it isn’t.

Can you drive? — Yes, I can. No, I can’t.

May I go? — Yes, you may. No, you may not.

Have you understood? — Yes, I (we) have. No, I (we) haven’t.

Does your friend learn English? — Yes, he(she) does. No, he (she)

doesn’t.

Did Tom phone yesterday? — Yes, he did. No, he didn’t.

Alternative Questions

За побудовою альтернативні запитання відрізняються від за-

гальних лише тим, що додається альтернатива or (чи). Але від-

повісти на альтернативне запитання “Так” або “Ні” неможли-

во — потрібно зробити вибір і побудувати речення.

Special (Wh-) Questions

За побудовою спеціальні запитання відрізняються від

загальних тим, що починаються із запитального слова або

фрази. (Wh-) questions називають так тому, що всі запитальнi

слова або фрази починаються з цього сполучення літер, крім сло-

ва How та фраз з ним.

27.3.1. Запитання до підмета

Subject Questions

Це найпростіші запитання, адже в запитаннях до підмета

(Who? What?) допоміжних дієслів не вживають і зберігається

прямий порядок слів розповідного або заперечувального речення.

Who lives in the surburb? Who called you? What are you?

What has happened? Who will be next? Who is helping you?

1. Поставте запитання до підмета. Зверніть увагу, що іноді

можна починати запитання з Whose + іменник або which +

іменник.

27.4. Роз’єднувальні запитання (уточнюючі)

Tail (Tag) Questions

Роз’єднувальні запитання, або запитання з “хвостиком”, ши-

роко застосовують у розмовній мові. Вони складаються з двох

частин: ствердження або заперечення чогось і власне запитання

у “хвостику”, після коми.

Таким чином, загальна формула така:

• якщо перша частина стверджувальна, то після коми став-

лять заперечувальний елемент;

• якщо перша частина заперечувальна, то після коми став-

лять стверджувальний елемент.

The weather is nice today, isn’t it?

We are having a lovely summer, aren’t we?

You haven’t been on holiday yet, have you?

You can’t help me, can you?

Agatha didn’t go to school, did she?

Timothy won’t come home until 6 pm, will he?

Запам’ятайте

У разі наказів або прохань щось зробити після коми викорис-

товують can you? could you?

Swiсh off your cellular phones, can you? Put them aside, could
