bean, he adds. ‘Trouble is that in this respect it becomes precisely like
spam. And we all know what happens to spam.’
It is important to remember that if the story is a good one, it will have a
chance of publication. And on a slow news day, it has an even better one.
Words and phrases journalists hate
Journalists’ pet hates include enormity (doesn’t mean huge), the chat-
tering classes, ironically (unless in the proper sense), luvvies, crippled/
disabled or any kind of disability, punter, legendary, luxury, fulsome,
‘creeping’ Americanisms, blocks (verb), ‘gender’ words like career girl,
signal or signalling (unless a transport story) and, needless to say, need-
less to say.
They also reject any needless or wasted word. Redundant words (in
italics): appear to be, brand new, close proximity, crisis situation, frown on
his face, few in number, include among them, merge/join together, more
preferable/superior, if and when, invited guest, new tradition, penetrate
into, on the question of, passing phase. The reader will find plenty more in
Essential English for Journalists, Editors and Writers (Pimlico Random
House) by that master of style, Harold Evans.
Journalists are always on the lookout for clichés, flowery adjectives and
overused expressions. If something can be said or written with fewer
words or in a shorter way, they will cut without hesitation.
Don’t forget the internet
Most large companies and organisations now make their press releases
available on the internet, and they can be printed out if required. Leading
organisations in the communications field, such as the Chartered Institute
of Public Relations, the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, the
Advertising Association and the national media organisations all have
internet sites from which their press releases can be downloaded. Again, it
is important that contact names and day/night telephone numbers are
included, as well as background information.
If you are setting up a virtual press office (VPO) to provide a 24-hour
service for journalists on the internet, ensure that access is simple and that
contact details, including email addresses, are included. Allow for
pictures and graphics to be downloaded, and update regularly.

ularly for TV and radio stations transmitting 24-hour rolling news. Video
