against men. To them their testimony is what mattered, and the last
thing they wanted was to make political capital out of it. Others saw
politics as a continuation of war by other means.
Adolf Hitler wrote about his war in Mein Kampf, and he too had
the ‘‘authority of direct experience.’’ The purpose of his memoir was
to unfold the political program he helped shape alongside other
veterans in the 1920s. Politics was the destination of memory. The
same was true of the French veteran Henri Barbusse, the author of a
war memoir entitled Le Feu, published in 1917 and translated into
English as Under Fire. Barbusse spoke out against war, and used the
proceeds of his award-winning novel to help fund one of the first
French veterans’ organizations. He later became a leading commu-
nist intellectual and political figure.
There were others, though, who claimed to reject politics of any
kind—right, left, or center. This strange configuration requires a bit
of elaboration. As Antoine Prost has shown, for many French vet-
erans between the wars, politics was not something natural, but
rather something disgusting, something done by little pigs wearing
elegant clothes who win elections only in order to get closer to the
trough. To them the term ‘‘politician’’ was synonymous with self-
serving, corrupt, stupid, and insensitive time-server. In their terms,
to engage in politics is to debase oneself and become morally com-
promised by definition. Politics puts people o√, it is ‘‘execrable,’’ it is
‘‘vile,’’ ‘‘shady,’’ ‘‘repugnant.’’

Why? Because it turns ‘‘truth’’—what they took to be the ‘‘truth’’
known by the veterans—into lies, lies which are used by politicians in
ways which make a mockery of the su√ering of the men who went to
war. What matters in this context is not the validity of the somewhat
extreme argument French veterans advanced. It is the way their argu-
ment sketched out a role for them as ‘‘moral witnesses.’’ As Prost put
it, their lives are shaped by their link with the dead of the war. They
speak out of a commitment to ‘‘witnessing, presence, and loyalty.’’
