For a brief period

around the turn of

the millennium, it

looked as though

Las Vegas might

actually go high-

brow. Steve Wynn

was displaying his

art collection at the

Bellagio, and the

Venetian boasted

two separate

Guggenheim

museums. Since

Wynn sold out,

and the larger of

the Guggenheims

closed, that

moment seems

to have passed. Even so,

the city still holds some

stimulating museums and

galleries.

These days it’s as much of a retail show-

room as a museum, but the classic cars and

bikes exhibited at Imperial Palace are still a

must-see for auto fans.

concert here

in 1956 to his

triumphant 1969

return to live

performance at the

Hilton. Though it’s

been decades since he

ﬁ nally left the building, the

King is very much alive

and well in his spiritual

home, with singing,

sweating lookalikes still

putting the Viva into Las

Vegas almost everywhere

you look.

If you spend all

your time on the

Strip, you could

almost forget that

Las Vegas is an

aberrant oasis

amid some of the

most desolately

beautiful desert on

earth. Fortunately, there

are several destinations

within easy reach where

it’s possible to sample

the splendor of the local

landscape. Further aﬁ eld

is the Grand Canyon, a

worthwhile destination

even though it’s almost

three hundred miles away

by road.

Las Vegas’s great escape; hike and bike

amid stunning red-rock sandscapes just

twenty miles from the Strip.
