adults gamble away their college funds,
but even ongoing redecoration has failed
to make its 4000 rooms anything special.
Few rooms have views to speak of – many
face in rather than out – their theming is
minimal, and there are no baths, only show-
ers. Thanks to an endless stream of tour
groups and families, the whole place tends
to be uncomfortably crowded; expect long
lines at the restaurants. Sun–Thurs $59, Fri
& Sat $99.
The Flamingo 3555 Las Vegas Blvd

W www.flamingolasvegas.com. Bugsy
Siegel’s oft-renovated Flamingo may not
be in the top rank of Vegas casinos, but
it’s a solid B-list choice, with a very central
location, 4000 well-appointed rooms, and a
great tropical-themed pool complex, com-
plete with genuine flamingos. Sun–Thurs
$79, Fri & Sat $129.
Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas 3960
Las Vegas Blvd S
T 702/632-5000,
W www.fourseasons.com/lasvegas/.
The first Las Vegas venture of the very
upmarket Four Seasons hotel chain exists
in a strange symbiotic relationship with
the Mandalay Bay. Although it seems like
an entirely separate building, entered
via its own driveway from the Strip, that
section only houses the lobby and res-
taurants; the 424 extravagantly opulent
guestrooms are in fact on the 35th to
39th floors of the Mandalay Bay. The
hotel’s unique selling point is as a luxuri-
ous refuge from the noise and pace of the
Strip – you can come and go without ever
seeing a slot machine, let alone contend-
ing with the usual crowds. There’s also
a gorgeous pool. Sun–Thurs $199, Fri &
Sat $319.
Harrah’s Las Vegas 3475 Las Vegas
Blvd S
T 702/369-5000 or 800/392-
9002,
W www.harrahsvegas.com.
Harrah’s addition of a 35-story tower,
on a great site facing Caesars Palace,
means that it now offers a total of 2700
bright, big, but somewhat anonymous and
not exceptionally cheap rooms. Expect
improvements soon, to suit Harrah’s status
as the flagship location for one of Las
Vegas’s very major players. Sun–Thurs
$79, Fri & Sat $139.
The Imperial Palace 3535 Las Vegas
Blvd S
T 702/731-3311 or 800/634-
6441,
W www.imperialpalace.com.
Behind its hideous mock-pagoda facade,
the Imperial Palace is, for travelers happy
to forego Las Vegas luxury, one of the best-
value options in the heart of the Strip. Its
standard rooms are adequate if not exciting
– all have balconies, though, which is quite
rare – while the irresistibly bizarre “luv tub”
suites, at about $30 extra, offer huge beds,
even bigger sunken baths, and mirrors
everywhere you can imagine. Sun–Thurs
$59, Fri & Sat $99.
Luxor Las Vegas 3900 Las Vegas Blvd
S
T 702/262-4102 or 888/777-0188,
W www.luxor.com. Spending a night or
two in this vast smoked-glass pyramid is
one of the great Las Vegas experiences;
any longer than that, and you may well be
sick of the endless trek to reach your room
from the nearest “inclinator” (elevator in
Luxor-speak). All the 2000 rooms in the
pyramid itself face outwards, with tremen-
dous views, and they’re much larger than
usual – partly to minimize the effect of the
slanting windows, partly because there’s
space for them to stretch into the hollow
interior. Unlike the additional 2000 rooms
in the newer tower next door, however
– some of which have jacuzzis next to
the windows – most pyramid rooms have
showers only, not baths. All are enjoyably
Egyptian-themed, with Art Deco furnishings
and Pharaonic bedspreads. Sun–Thurs
$79, Fri & Sat $119.

THEhotel,

Mandalay Bay, an upscale young-adult
playground that tries (pretty success-
fully) to beat the Hard Rock at its own
game, can feel a little far removed from
the bustle of the central Strip. Each of its
luxurious rooms has a superb bath and
walk-in shower; the vaguely Asiatic them-
ing varies, and the floor plans can be a bit
odd, but some have great Strip views. A
second 43-story tower houses the nomi-
nally distinct THEhotel, which has its own
lobby to enable guests to avoid the casino
area altogether, and holds around 1100
