THEWLIS, DAVID (1963– )
Born David Wheeler in Blackpool, England, Thewlis made
his name in Mike Leigh’s film Naked (1993). He has a small
role as the Hospitaler in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN—some-
one well aware of the mayhem the Christians have caused in
their defense of the Holy Land: “By the word religion, I’ve
seen the lunacy of fanatics of every determination be called
‘the will of God.’ Holiness is in right action, and courage on
behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And good-
ness—what God deserves—is here and here [he points to his
heart and his head.] And what you decide to do every day,
you’ll be a good man or not.” Balian (ORLANDO BLOOM)
never forgets this message, as he makes similar gestures while
talking to Sibylla (EVA GREEN) immediately after forging
a peace deal with Saladin (GHASSAN MASSOUD).
For all his common sense, the Hospitaler will never
countermand his commanding officer’s orders, even when
he knows that they are wrong. Thus the Hospitaler leaves the
city of Jerusalem to fight a fruitless battle against Saladin in
the desert, though well aware that the Christians, unable to
adapt to alien conditions (especially a shortage of water),
will be massacred.
Thewlis’s subsequent films include ALL THE INVISIBLE
CHILDREN: “JONATHAN” where he plays a photojournal-
ist traumatized by the experience of working in war zones.
