village of Fátima, three shepherd children saw a fl ash of light,
from which emerged a bright light that rested on a tree. In it
appeared the Holy Virgin, with a white rosary in her hands,
the way the Virgin of Fátima is still portrayed in statues and
images today. She asked the children to pray for peace in
the world and promised to appear on the same day during
the following months. The apparitions were repeated in the
following fi ve months. During these apparitions, the Virgin
shared several secret messages with one of the children,
Lúcia. Two of them dealt with World War I and the Bolshevik
revolution. The third message, however, was not revealed
until Pope John Paul II visited Fátima in 2000. Apparently
it had been a prophesy of the assassination attempt on the
Pope in 1981. The last apparition was on 13 October 1917,
when the so-called ‘miracle of the sun’ was witnessed by
around 70,000 pilgrims. According to eyewitnesses, the
sky suddenly darkened and the sun moved across the sky
in a large circle. It was not until 13 years later, after a long
and careful investigation, that the Catholic Church offi cially
acknowledged the apparitions.
Due to the rapidly growing number of pilgrims, the original
small chapel built on the site of the apparition was replaced
by an imposing basilica that took 25 years to construct. The
actual heart of the sanctuary is the small, modern Chapel
of the Apparitions, which was erected on the site where the
Virgin fi rst appeared to the children. It also houses the famous
statue of the Virgin, whose copy can be bought in different
sizes at the many stalls that surround the sanctuary.
Days before the popular pilgrimages on the 13th day of
each month from May to October, the roads to Fátima are
crowded with thousands of pilgrims who walk to the sanctuary
from all over Portugal. These are modern pilgrims, equipped
with refl ective vests and support teams in automobiles, but
their faith remains unchanged. Just as in 1917, these people
come to Fátima to pay vows, pray or ask the Virgin for help.
The highlights of the pilgrimages are outdoor masses in the
courtyard of the basilica, and processions of the image of the
Virgin of Fátima. During the last night of every pilgrimage
cycle, the large square in front of the basilica turns into a
