COMPACT AXIAL TURBINE

VA TECH HYDRO is a world leader

in bulb-turbines for hydropower

generation. For low heads up to

about 30 m we have developed the

Compact Axial Turbine, a cost-effective

concept for efficient water power

utilization.

The Compact Axial Turbine is based on a

modular design concept with the same key

components used for various alternatives.

This makes the Compact Axial Turbine

versatile.

Particular attention has been paid to

avoiding water pollution. A water-lubricated

shaft bearing meets the requirements

both from the technical and environmental

points of view.

The Compact Axial Turbine utilizes water

power potential at the highest possible

efficiencies. Depending on flow rates, it is

available both in double and single regulated

(semi-Kaplan) versions.

All guarantees are based on model test

results or numerical flow analyses in the

VA TECH HYDRO laboratories.

The turbine and generator are assembled

to form an integral unit together with the

gearing required. CAT units can thus be

installed in the finished powerhouse as

complete aggregates – already shop-tested –

prior to final embedding. This brings

enormous savings in erection time and

costs.

VA TECH HYDRO, a world leader in bulb

turbine design and production, has devel-

oped the Compact Belt Drive Bulb Turbine.

This concept has been designed for low

head applications where this low budget

solution offers a cost-effective way of

exploiting especially small water power.

Based on the well-proven Bevel Gear Bulb

Turbine, the Belt Drive Bulb Turbine comple-

ments the Compact Hydro Program in the low

head segment.

Modern and compact, these machines offer

many advantages and attractive design

features. Thanks to double regulation, with

controllable runner blades and wicket gates.

Compact Belt Drive Bulb Turbines make

the most of available energy through optimal

efficiency and outstanding part-load charac-

teristics. All guarantees are backed up by model

tests in the VA TECH HYDRO laboratories.

Turbine, belt drive and generator form a

compact unit which is delivered fully assembled

and shop-tested. Installation into completed

powerhouse is achieved in only one embedding

phase thus drastically reducing erection time

and costs.

The design concept of these compact turbines

likewise reduces construction costs. Minimal

powerhouse dimensions with simple intake and

outflow contours substantially reduce overall

expenditures.
