• 5–20 and 30: The numerals 5–20 and 30 are declined alike, following the
same declension pattern as feminine singular nouns ending in a soft sign
(e.g. кость (‘bone’)). The numeral 8 has two forms of the instrumental:
восьмью or восемью.
Здесь девять из десяти людей ‘Nine out of ten older people here
постарше без ландышей уже cannot live without lilies of the
жить не могут. valley.’
(десяти is genitive)
Compound numbers ending in 5–9 decline like the numerals 5–9 (59, 68,
105, etc.):
сто пять страниц ‘a hundred and five pages’
• 40, 90 and 100: сорок (40), девяносто (90), сто (100) end in -а in all
oblique cases:
Их раньше — давно — было ‘Before, a long time ago – there
около сорока. were about forty of them.’
(сорока in genitive)
Проехали больше ста километров. ‘They travelled over a hundred
kilometres.’
• 50, 60, 70 and 80: пятьдесят, шестьдесят, семьдесят, восемьдесят have
both component parts declined. Each part is declined like a feminine
noun ending in a soft sign:
из семидесяти человек ‘out of seventy people’
There is no final soft sign in these numerals in the nominative and accusa-
tive case.
• 200, 300 and 400: двести, триста, четыреста have both component parts
declined.
• 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900: пятьсот, шестьсот, семьсот, восемьсот,
девятьсот have both component parts declined:
с высоты трёхсот километров ‘from a height of three hundred
metres’
• 1000: тысяча is declined as a feminine noun:
одна тысяча, две тысячи, пять тысяч ‘one, two, five thousand(s)’
По тысяче рублей получаем. ‘We receive a thousand roubles
each.’
Тысяча has two forms of the instrumental: тысячей or тысячью. After
numerals in oblique cases, тыяча goes into the plural form of that
oblique case:
