bubbly curls, and daring silk “teddy.” Mary Pickford’s long, fair curls and
wholesome appearance made her “America’s sweetheart.” She can be
paired with her husband, Douglas Fairbanks, who, dashing and athletic,
swashbuckled his way through movies such as The Black Pirate and The
Mark of Zorro. A pair of silk evening pajamas will give women the kind of
sophistication—and notoriety—actor and singer Gertrude Lawrence
achieved in 1926 when she appeared in the Gershwin musical Oh, Kay!
Silk pajamas, worn as a casual “at home” evening outfit, were considered
very “fast” (meaning exciting or shocking).
Silk evening wear for men, on the other hand, was considered elegant
and very English. Noel Coward, the English playwright and wit, set the
vogue for silk pajamas and, especially, dressing gowns in 1924 when he
first came to public attention in America. A paisley silk dressing gown
became his signature garment and is a surefire hit for dressing up—add
hair gel, a long cigarette holder, or a cocktail glass, and you have an
instant character.
WOMEN’S ACCESSORIES
The signature hat for the period was undoubtedly
the cloche, a small, close-fitting helmet that
covered the newly shorn hair and framed the face.
The early styles had a small, upward-curved
brim, but by 1928, the brim had disappeared
completely. Cloches came in felt, velvet, or
varnished sisal straw. For upmarket evening wear,
couture milliners turned out orientally inspired
turbans and toques to match their dresses.
Although hats were still de rigueur among the
older generation of women, many younger
women went instead for headbands, scarves,
bandeaux, and even fancy combs and ostrich
feathers, especially for evening wear. These are
easy to make and are the best way of adding
authenticity to a costume. A strip of furnishing
braid makes a great headband.
Stockings for general wear were made of cotton
lisle and were much sturdier than the flesh-
colored ones worn for evenings. Today’s opaque
stockings in various colors are fine: cheating with
pantyhose is acceptable as long as you’re not
wearing a short dress.
