Dam is the
main
structure of the
Kiso River Basin
Development Proiect.
The
purposes
of the dam
are flood
control, ifiigation, municipal
water
supply
and hydroelectric
power generation
(maximum
28B,OOOkW of a
pumped
storage
po\uer
station).
The
structural
characteristics
of
lwaya Dam are
the follo,vinc.
The first one is the ski-iump
spitlway
with the
capacity of
4,(momls, which was
installed
as an emergency
spillwav.
The second cha.acteristic
is the two sets of radialgate
having
a heiahtofl8.3m
and a width of10.9m
installed
at the
intake
of th€
spillway. This is the
largest.adial
gate
ever
constructed in
rapan.
The
third
and the last
characteristic
is the selective
intake tower of
85m
hi8h,
co6ting
t-lO
million.
The facility
makes it
po6sible
to withdraw
water
from
reqlired
elevation
of the reservoir
after measuring
the ve ical distribution
of the water temperature
and the turbiditv.

The foundation
.ock at the dam
site
is
quite
solid
at the
river bed,
horvever
weaker and
more cracky
at
higher elevations.
Outstandine
features of
this dam are as
follows:
(1)
Thereexists a laultzonewith
a width
of aboutlo
meters at the
right abutmentof
the dam
site, and the
portion
where
the fault
crosses overthe
core zone
of tlle dam was excavated
and
replaced by
the core
materials.
The
portions
of thefault
left unremovedwere
coveted
both
upstream
and
downstream sides
with a blanket
constructed
by
core
materials.
(2)
Three different
kinds of rocks
for embankment
were available
and
each
rock
material was
placed
to the
portion
where
the
quality
of
rock is
suitable.
(3)
Rock embankment
was consotidated
by
using
15
ton
vibrating
rollers
in the
process
of
constructing
the dam,
internal
frictions
and
minimize
the
settlement
and
deformation
after
the
reservoir
f illing.
