Note: This ex pres sion co mes from a pop u lar tele vi sion show
fea tur ing the two well-known crit ics, the late Gene Siskel
and Roger Ebert, who gave in di vid ual cri tiques of movies.
At the end of both re views, the home au di ence was shown
ei ther a fist with a thumb point ing up (for a fa vor able
re view) or a fist with a thumb point ing down (for an
un fa vor able re view) be low each critic’s name. Many times
the crit ics were not in agree ment. How ever, when both
gave a fa vor able re view, the au di ence was shown two
thumbs up. This ex pres sion can also be used in ref er ence
to only one per son’s fa vor able re view: I give the movie two
thumbs up!
