Проблема вымирания языков стоит сейчас необычайно остро и на фоне других мировых проблем пока еще не осознается как действительно серьезная. Тем не менее, этот процесс в последнее время приобрел катастрофический характер. Вот что пишет известный лингвист Вяч. Вс. Иванов: «Всего в мире в конце завершившегося века было больше 6000 языков. Согласно часто высказывавшемуся прогнозу в ближайшие десятилетия останется не более десятой их части — около 600 языков. Повсеместно осуществляется языковой сдвиг к немногим языкам; большинство языков мира сохраняется на протяжении нескольких поколений только в маленьких группах говорящих преимущественно старшего поколения: из 187 индейских языков Северной Америки 149 уже не выучиваются детьми» (Иванов Вяч. Вс. Лингвистика третьего тысячелетия. Вопросы к будущему. М., 2004).

Специально этой проблеме посвящена книга Daniel Nettle и Suzanne Romaine «Vanishing Voices. The Extinction of the World's Languages», изданная в 2000 году в Оксфорде. В какой-то мере она компенсирует нехватку подобной литературы в русской лингвистике.
