Gli alloggi
At home
The apartment block (il palazzo) is the
most common form of urban housing
in Italy. A single-family house (la
villetta) is more common in rural areas.
To find out the total number of rooms,
you will need to ask “Quante stanze?”.
If you want to know how many
bedrooms, ask “Quante camere?”.

Cultural tip You almost never see an Italian
home without shutters or roller shades at every window.
These are closed at night and in the heat of the day.
Curtains tend to be more for decoration. Most
apartment blocks have at least one balcony (“il
balcone”) for each apartment. These are often filled
with plants to make up for the lack of a garden.
