Dam is a
concrete
gravity
dam being constructed
on
the foundation
rock in Mesozoic, sandstone
and slate
with
the dykes of rhyolite and
quartz diorite. The foundation
rock
is fractured and
altered by many faults and intusion
of
hypabyssal
rock, and shear
resistance of it is much
lower tian
those of the
other dams. A rockfill dam
would be con-
structed on such a foundation in
general
but a concrete
gravity
dam was adopted
because the
overflow
spillway cannot
be
constructed for a large amount of flood
flow in case of
a rockfill
dam, The
dam was designed as a
gravity
dam
vdth a base
mat in the figures to ensure shearing
resistancc of the
dam.
Roller Compacted
Dam Concrete Method
(RCD
Method)
was
adopted for the base mat to
place
a large amount
of concrete
efficiently
in a wide area.
Curtain
grouting
for the terrace
deposits of the
right abutment
was
carried
out using sleeve
grouting
method.

is a multipurpose dam
on the Shinano
River and is
now under construction
by the Ministry of
Construction.
The
foundation of the dam
mainly consists of
granite.
In
the left abutment
the sound rock is deep,
so
that
continuous
underground
concrete wall $as
constructed by ICOS method. The dam
site is in
such a beatiful environment,
that
special
consideration
is
paid
to
preserve
natural beauty during construction. Dam
concrete is being placed
by travell-
ing
jib
cranes
to deqease
the
volume
of excavation
on both abutments in stead of cable
crane. The
selective intake is in-
stalled
to
take warm
water from surface
of the reservoir, to
prevent
turbidity of the reservoir
water.

Sagae Dam is a multipurpose
rockfill dam with center
core being constructed
on the
Sagae River. The foundation
of
the dam consists
of diorite and
granite with
many
faults and fissures.
Therefore, the
foundation
treatments are carried out
elaborately.
Talus
deposit on the left abutment
of the upstream
of the dam
was designed to be left as foundation of rock zone and
weighting zone
was filled by
rocks in order to ensure the
stability
of the dam against sliding by drawndown of the reservoir.
Natural water
content
of core material is much
higher than
required and working days for embanking core are res-
tricted
because of heavy snowfall and
rainfall which reaches
4000mm
in a
year.
So stock
pile
was
prepared
to
control wa-
ter content and
grading
of
core materials and effective
filing embakment
is engaged.

rocks

rhyolite in the left abutment.
Especia.lly,
the
foundation
rock in
the
ght
abutment
has
been
partially
altered
by volcanic
hydlothermal activities,
and some
portions
are vulnerable
to slaking.
Designing
and construction
of the dam, therefore,
is
carefully done due to
such a disadvantageous
geologic
condition.

A
preferential
construction
is
paid,
during the construction,
on the
environmental
conservation
in
the vicinity of the
dam
site
and a
prefectural
natural
park
on
the left side of the reservou.
