A MATTER OF PLACE 71
6. Whereas it is essential to maintain a culture of architects, planners, engi-
neers, technical agents, and economists charging them with the steward-
ship of cultural and ecological values;
7. Whereas urban projects should offer ideas and visions that yield holistic
solutions to problems incorporating social inclusion, mobility, health,
welfare, and quality human settlements for citizens all over the world;
8. Whereas Barcelona—among other cities in the world—is a useful example
of this new sensibility and the Universal Forum of Cultures 2004 will be the
perfect opportunity to accentuate this thinking and to spread it globally;
9. Whereas architects and presidents of the professional institutions repre-
sented hereby are contributing with several programs to present in the
UIA Congress in Istanbul, in 2005, the best examples of architectural bio-
diversity and to create a “Bazaar” of world architectures, illustrating a
position of responsible behavior with the future of humanity and its built
environment;
In conclusion, the undersigned support the present BARCELONA DEC-
LARATION in the forum of the Construction Fair, CONSTRUMAT 2003, as a
starting point for strategic actions, aiming toward a fuller understanding of
environmental projects related to sustainable design in architecture, encour-

construction sector for a humanity in peace and assuring through design
stewardship with the natural resources and their ecological values. OPTING

signed confirm our support through the Barcelona Declaration for
