Mahmoud Taleghani (1911-1979) was an Iranian theologian, Muslim
reformer, democracy advocate and a senior Shi'a cleric of Iran.
Taleghani was a contemporary of the Iranian Revolutionary leader
Ayatollah Khomeini and one of the leaders of the movement against
Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. A founding member of the Freedom
Movement of Iran, he has been described as a representative of the
tendency of many Shia clerics to blend Shia with Marxist ideals
during the 1960s and 1970s. His "greatest influence" has been said
to have been in "his teaching of Quranic exegesis," as many later
revolutionaries were his students.
"Partovi az Quran", A shining ray from Quran, is an exegesis on the
Quran written by M. Taleghani in 6 volumes. One of the features of
this commentary is lexicographical analysis and pondering on
Quranic literature. The author also makes moderate use of
theological methods. He advises the reader not to limit his
understanding of Quran by making any pre-assumptions, either
scientific or philosophical. He also emphasizes relying on hadith
for understanding mutashabihat (uncertainties).
