The present volume has been built up around fifteen papers presented at an inteational conference co-organised by the Department of Medieval Studies of the Central European University, Budapest, the Centre d'Etude des Religions du Livre, Paris, the De Wulf-Mansion Centre at the Catholic University of Leuven, and the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, Hungary. It was held on 25-29 October 2000, in the wonderful premises of the old Benedictine abbey built on a hill of the Tihany peninsula and looking down on Lake Balaton, where the participants could enjoy the kind hospitality of the Prior, Richard Korzenszky.
