This thesis investigates issues in the orthographical errors Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) leaers face when leaing to write kanji. In particular, the study analyzes the leaers’ kanji error production in terms of proportion and spacing, examining to see whether these errors would be improved after receiving special calligraphic instruction. Fourteen advanced-level JFL leaers participated in two sessions: traditional and kōhitsu instruction (pen/pencil calligraphy), and were then assigned to practice kanji for a week with a separate specialized kanji sheet
