These are the bands placed around projectiles to prevent the
forward loss of gas around the projectile. They are usually made
from copper, gilding metal and sometimes sintered iron. The mode
day has intruded here also and they will now be encountered in
plastic versions. Their use and introduction can be traced back to
the time when cylindrical projectiles first appeared.
