The Marine Climatological Summaries Scheme, which was first agreed
by the Fourth World Meteorological Congress in 1963, has proved to
be a unique and very successful set of procedures for the
collection, exchange, quality control, archival and processing of
marine climatological data. Complete global and regional sets of
such data, dating back to at least 1960, are now available in
standard formats, and with known, standardized quality, from a
number of archival centres. These marine climatological data sets,
covering a large number of variables of the marine atmosphere and
the sea surface, have always been extremely valuable in the
provision of services to the marine user community, particularly in
areas such as offshore mining and coastal construction.
